Review: The Cleansweep Counterstrike by Chuck Waldron with Giveaway

Today, is the second post for yesterday's Mommy and Daddy's day! Every so often, here on Bookworm for Kids, I post reads for adults because moms and dads like to read too. The books I present are the type which parents don't need to hide under their beds for fear the kids might read something they shouldn't.

In this sequel, Matt Tremain is back, facing an even deadlier threat. Deceit and intrigue lie hidden behind the collapse of Operation CleanSweep. It’s time for revenge.

Instrumental in exposing the evil behind Operation CleanSweep—a diabolical “cultural cleansing” plot masterminded by Toronto billionaire Charles Claussen—investigative blogger Tremain now faces the madman’s desire for vengeance. Claussen intends to settle the score personally by luring Matt into a deadly trap.

But the clock is ticking for Claussen, too. Fraternité des Aigles, The Brotherhood of Eagles—a shadowy group that secretly financed Claussen’s Operation CleanSweep—wants answers and their money back. Consumed with rage, Claussen risks everything to get to Matt before the Brotherhood gets to him. Tremain is once again partnering with a police detective, Carling. Knowing they are being lured into a possible trap, they decide to face their nemesis, Charles Claussen.

Across four continents, Claussen sets traps, pursues Tremain, and continues to execute his signature brand of global chaos. When his fiancé’s life is on the line, can Tremain stop Claussen’s madness and still avoid getting killed?

MY TIDBITS

This is the second novel in the Matt Tremain Technothriller series, and I enjoyed this one even more than the first.

Claussen faked his death and now has revenge on his mind as well as other plans. Matt finds himself tripping into Claussen's trap and trying to catch the evil man while not winding up killed in the process. But this game might be harder than the first.

After Claussen's plans were stopped in the first book, the second one follows the aftermath. While Claussen still wants to see CleanSweep completed...if not in the US than somewhere else...revenge is high on his priority list, which kept this from being a repeat of book one. The tension in this one flows differently as the evil plans aren't as laid out, but rather Claussen finds himself more chaotic than he prefers. It makes for more action and tension as the chase now runs across the globe, and thanks also to the Brotherhood, more parties are involved.

The first chapters center heavily on Claussen, which allow his dark side to take full flight. The reader gets a slightly better feel for his personality in this book as well as that of Matt's and Carling's. Unfortunately, Matt's other two side-kicks from book one don't hit the spotlight very often in this book. On the other hand, there are some interesting new characters who play temporary roles, and they add quite a bit of spark to the mix.

The plot isn't quite as demonic for the most part, but the author keeps the suspense in full gear. There are still some hazy spots in background information and logic, but the story holds sound enough to keep the reader in the pages. There were some time issues in the first book, and this isn't as big a factor this time either, leaving less confusion on that front. It was still a little difficult to fall completely into the story and get lost in the world as the writing keeps the reader at arm's length instead of allowing them to get up and close with the characters.

I definitely found this book more engaging and the plot as well as the pacing clearer and gripping. It's an interesting thriller with enough twists and surprises to keep the reader guessing until the last page.

And here he is...

Chuck Waldron is the author of four riveting mystery, thriller and suspense novels and more than fifty short stories. Inspired by his grandfather’s tales of the Ozark Mountains and local caves rumored to be havens for notorious gangsters, Waldron was destined to write about crime and the human condition. Those childhood legends ignited his imagination and filled his head with unforgettable characters, surprising plots and a keen interest in supernatural and historical subplots.

With literary roots planted in the American Midwest and South, and enriched by many years living in the fertile cultural soil of metropolitan Ontario, Waldron now resides on Florida’s fabled Treasure Coast with his wife, Suzanne. While keeping an eye out for hurricanes, alligators, and the occasional Burmese python, visitors will find Waldron busy writing his next crime thriller.
