Today's read... Alan's Big, Scary Teeth by Jarvis

It's been a bit since I picked up a cute, humor-packed picture book, which still holds a message, too...and this one (I'd heard) would be perfect. It has been around for several years but is being rereleased soon. Since I've only heard about today's read and never taken a glance myself, it was time to change that and see if it's worth a peek or not.

So, let's find out!

ALAN'S BIG, SCARY TEETH
by Jarvis
Candlewick Press
Picture Book
32 pages
ages 4 to 8

Meet Alan, an alligator with a secret. Famed for his big, scary teeth, he sneaks into the jungle every day to scare the jungle animals ..."I'm big, scary Alan! Fear my razor-sharp teeth!" But after a long day of scaring, Alan likes nothing better than to run a warm mud bath and take out his false teeth, which nobody knows about! That is, until his teeth go missing. What will Alan do now? Scaring is the only thing he knows how to do! Can he still be scary without them?

MY TIDBITS

Scary teeth take a fun twist, making this an alligator to adore...despite those sharp choppers.

This book is a somewhat-fearful-but-completely-humorous treat. The beginning does draw out a tiny sense of insecurity as the alligator shows off his sharp teeth...no one wants to come face-to-face with those. But at the same time, the illustrations bring in delightful, comic relief. And that makes this read tons of fun.

About mid-way through, everything takes a huge turn, adding an unexpected direction to the alligator's chomping-antics. And all of this together guarantees that this is a read to be picked up again...and again....and again. I received a DRC through Edelweiss and enjoyed this read quite a bit.
