Celebrate The Ceruleans by Charlotte Wilson with a Giveaway

THE CERULEANS
5 Book Series
YA Paranormal
by Charlotte Wilson

DEATH WISH (Book One)

Seventeen-year-old Scarlett Blake is haunted by death. Her sister has made the ultimate dramatic exit: run away from school, join a surfing fraternity, drown in a tragic ‘accident’.

Following in her sister’s footsteps, Scarlett comes to an isolated English cove to uncover the truth. And, as it turns out, to fall in love with the place and its people, especially a certain blue-eyed surfer with a serious case of the heroics.

But as Scarlett’s quest for the truth unravels, so too does her grip on reality as she’s always known it. Because there’s something strange going on in this little cove. A dead magpie circles the skies. A dead deer watches from the undergrowth. Hands glow with light. Power

What transpires is a summer of discovery: of what it means to conquer fear, to fall in love, to choose life, to choose death.

To believe the impossible.

The Ceruleans: soulful, coming-of-age romance with a paranormal edge. Five books, one question – if the might of the heavens were in your hands, would you be sinner or saint?

Anniversary

The cake was homemade. Lopsided. Slathered in gloopy frosting. Judging by Adam’s previous attempts in the kitchen, it was safe to assume it would be inedible.
Estelle loved it.
‘You baked? For me?’
She reached over and pulled Adam into a hug, awkward with the massive baby bump wedged between them.
‘Happy anniversary!’ he said.
Estelle pulled back, frowning. ‘That’s tomorrow.’
A year since she had Become a Cerulean. A year since she had died.
‘I know,’ said Adam. ‘But I have a surprise for you. A… gift. And I wasn’t sure how you’d take it, so I thought: give it to you today, and if you… well, if it’s not what you want, then it hasn’t spoiled tomorrow.’ He smiled at her – nervously.
‘O-kay,’ said Estelle. She couldn’t fathom what gift she could potentially dislike that much. Unless he’d bought her something girlie. She didn’t do girlie.
‘Good,’ said Adam. He grabbed her hands. ‘Ready?’
She’d barely begun to nod when it happened… the picnic blanket, the beach, the ocean, all gone, replaced, in the bewildering blink of an eye, by a grimy urban alleyway.
What came next was not pretty. Estelle hadn’t been that sick since her first trimester.
‘Are you insane?’ she hissed eventually, when she was done and could get a word in edgeways between Adam’s apologies and panicked are-you-okay-is-the-baby-okays. ‘You Travelled us to…’ She looked about and recognition made her jaw drop. ‘No,’ she said. ‘Truro?’
White-faced, Adam nodded. He didn’t say anything; he just pointed at a shopfront visible at the top of the alley. The sign was so weathered it was unreadable. That didn’t matter; Estelle knew exactly what it said: Tattoo Tony’s.
Furious, she rounded on Adam. ‘You’d better start explaining right now.’
‘The nightmares you’ve been having about… him. I couldn’t do nothing. It’s not right, Estelle, that he’s living his life here. Unpunished. So…’ He held out his hands. Ethereal blue light lit the alley.
‘Quit it!’ Estelle slapped his hands, hard. ‘Adam…’ She stared at the one person she loved, who’d given her a home and a purpose – to whom she’d confided her deepest, most painful secret: that when she was nine, the year before her mother ODed, a man named Tattoo Tony had abused her.
Adam stared right back at her, and there was a spark in his eyes she’d never seen before. ‘What’s the point of having power over life and death,’ he said, ‘if you can’t use it to take out a bad guy? One touch, Estelle. That’s all it would take.’
No! she should have yelled. No, Adam, that’s sacrilegious, against everything the Ceruleans stand for. But the words wouldn’t come.
She looked up the alley again, at the shop. She lay a hand on her swollen belly. Then she reached out and took Adam’s hand, and they walked toward the street.
They would have looked an odd couple – he the picture boy for geek chic, her Gothed out from head to foot – had they been visible. They weren’t, though, thanks to Adam’s power. They could walk right across that street, into the tattoo parlour and kill a man, and no one would ever know it was them.
At the door to the shop, which was propped open, Estelle pulled Adam to a stop. She could see an old man inside. He was gaunt and stooped, and his breath was coming in wheezy pants.
‘Do you feel it?’ she murmured to Adam.
‘Yes,’ he said. ‘Lung cancer, I think.’
‘How long does he have?’
‘Months, if that.’
Estelle thought carefully before asking the next question: ‘Do you feel the pull? Are you meant to heal him?’
She saw Adam shake his head. No. This man was destined to die. Slowly. Painfully.
Suddenly, she realised that she could see Adam; he was no longer shielding them from view. That’s how well he knew her. There would be no wicked deed here today, no Falling from grace. Only justice of the karmic kind.
‘God I love you,’ she said, and she pressed her lips to his.
‘Er… can I help you?’ Tony had come to the door and was frowning at the couple kissing on his doorstep.
Estelle and Adam broke off, but they didn’t even look at the man beside them.
‘Take me home,’ Estelle told Adam… and he did.

They stayed on the beach for the rest of the day, lying in the sun, paddling in the surf. When the sun set there wasn’t a crumb left of that cake. It was dry. It was salty. It was crunchy with egg shell. But it was the most delicious thing either of them had ever eaten.

And here she is. . .

Once upon a time a little girl told her grandmother that when she grew up she wanted to be a writer. Or a lollipop lady. Or a fairy princess. ‘Write, Charlotte,’ her grandmother advised. So that’s what she did.

Thirty-odd years later, Charlotte is a professional writer. For authors and publishers, she writes and edits books as The Book Specialist. For herself, she writes soulful, coming-of-age romance for young adults.

Charlotte grew up in the Royal County, a hop, skip and a (very long) jump from Windsor Castle, but these days she makes her home in a village of Greater Manchester with her husband and two children. When she’s not reading or writing, you’ll find her walking someplace green, baking up a storm, or embarking on a DIY project. She recently achieved a lifetime ambition of creating a library in her home to house her ever-increasing collection of books. She pretends not to notice that the shelves are rather wonky.

Review: The Forgotten Fairytales by Angela Parkhurst

FORGOTTEN FAIRYTALES
Forgotten Fairytales, Book One
by Angela Parkhurst
YA Fairytale Retellings/Fantasy
360 pages

Once upon a time, seventeen-year-old Norah Hart believed in the lure of fairytales and happily ever afters. That was before she was forced to live in a fairy tale nightmare.

A psychotic, couture-clad, shoe obsessed Princess.
A not-so-charming, alcoholic Prince.
A hot Big Bad Wolf that she absolutely cannot fall for—no matter how well he kisses.

If Norah had known she’d be attending a boarding school for the nut job reincarnations of fairy tale characters, she would have insisted on going to Moscow with her father. But getting out isn’t as easy as she thought. Especially once Norah realizes she, too, is a storybook character. An Unknown. The first one in over one hundred years. Soon Norah learns she has the ability to rewrite the stories, putting everyone’s Happily Ever After in jeopardy.

Some princesses will do whatever it takes to protect their endings. Even if it means betraying the one closest to you.

 MY TIDBITS

Norah is accustom to moving around and seeing the world. Every year or so, her father ups her and sister and herself as his job requires, making it hard for her to find friends. Again, it's time for a move. This time, however, he's not taking the two girls with them and leaves them at a boarding school instead--an odd one. The castle on the top of the hill is only reachable by horse driven carriage, but that's not the strangest thing. Inside, the kids dress like fairy tale characters and attended classes never seen in a normal school setting. Norah has no idea where she's landed now.

This was simply a delightful read. It reminds of The School for Good and Evil, but instead of heading off into fantasy pure, this tale has roots in the modern day world. The beginning was a little too quick, not allowing the reader or character to really settle into what was happening. But after this rough beginning, the story takes over and refuses to let go.

Norah is a wonderful character--a little spunky, a little unsure, a big heart, and totally out of place. She could fit in, kind of, but refuses for different reasons. It makes her easy to cheer for and feel for, especially since the circumstances around her are so different and not easy to embrace. The other characters are also a real treat--each reeling in with distinct personalities. There are those definitely to hate and those to like. It's pretty straight forward but offers an enjoyable read without the bogging down of too many layers.

As to pacing, this book holds a steady trot the entire way through. There are dangerous moments, action, secrets, hidden agendas, and evil plots. Some of it is predictable, other times unexpected. Still, it's a fairy tale with all the magic, joy and pain, making it impossible to put down.

And the romance. Well. That's a bad-boy, roller coaster delight. Warning: there are some slightly intense sexual scenes but nothing tasteless or vivid. And there are moments, where things move fast. Still, the hero is all a guy needs to be with an added ton of bite. But for the dangers Norah's up against, she can't use a push-over.

Summed up, this is a great read for fairy tale, castle, princess and fantasy fans. And I was eager to dive into book two.

FORGET ME NOT
The Forgotten Fairytales, Book Two
by Angela Parkhurst
YA Fantasy/Fairytale Retelling

“I’ve never been to a ball or followed the yellow brick road, and I sure as hell never imagined myself living in a world of fairytale characters. Most of which want me dead. So when they come, because they will, I need to be ready.”

“And you think you could kill someone?”

“I know I could.”

When the academy in Nottingham burns down, sending in a new slew of fairytale classmates, Norah Hart comes face to face with new challenges, enemies and friendships. But the longer she is in this world, the more she realizes there is no getting out, leaving her with only one option–be prepared.

FORGET ME NOT is the second book in the Forgotten Fairytale series.

MY TIDBITS

Now, that's things have settled down and the bad girl's been ousted, Norah's a little unsure on her feet. The real world still tugs at her heart, and the fairy tale school doesn't exactly feel like home. But her chance to think about such things doesn't hold on long.

Norah's lack of enthusiasm to still embrace a fairy tale world makes her wonderfully realistic. Despite the changes she's been able to cause in the school and her own emerging powers, she's not ready to let the world swallow her up. Her reactions and desires are very understandable, and it's easy to feel for her as she's dragged into a position she doesn't really want to take.

I found this book even more enjoyable than the first. It starts where book one left off--so nope, this is not a stand-alone--and was simple to dive into and continue with Norah's adventures. The new characters really bring this one to life and are a sheer delight to meet. There's a lot of tension, especially on the romance end. Plus, Norah has some inner battles going on which are not only on point but give her any depth she still didn't have in book one.

Of course, there's an 'evil' plot and Norah's got to dig up more secrets and intrigue. The twists and turns are a bit more unexpected and the bigger picture of the series begins to unfold. This was again, a book I could read from start to finish in one setting and was sad when it was over. The magic mixes well with sarcasm, danger and tons of rocky romance, insuring a pull at the heart strings, adventure and more.

Review: Forget Me Not by Megan Tayte

FORGET ME NOT
The Ceruleans II
by Megan Tayte
Heaven Afire
YA Paranormal
338 pages

IN THE FACE OF DEATH, SHE MUST PROTECT THOSE SHE LOVES.

The Ceruleans: mere mortals infused with power over life and death. Five books; one question: If the might of the heavens were in your hands, would you be sinner or saint?

Death is stalking Scarlett Blake. As if the encroaching darkness in her head wasn’t enough, she’s become disturbingly accident prone. Falling off a cliff isn’t ideal when all you want is as much time as possible to live, to love.

Her fate is horrifying. Unbearable. And inescapable. No one can save Scarlett from The End that’s looming. Not Jude, the Cerulean who is intent on Claiming her. Not Luke, the boy who is intent on loving her.

The clock is ticking, louder with every heartbeat. Now Scarlett must decide how best to protect the people she loves. Will she trust in Jude and the life-after-death he promises? Will she stand against the Fallen, who have her sister captive? Will she carry the burden of her death alone – every headache, every hallucination, every wrenching, aching emotion?

And when the clock falls silent, when the darkness eclipses the light, will Scarlett fight for life? Or will she have no choice but to surrender?

MY TIDBITS

This is the second book in the series, and since so much of it builds on what happened before, I wouldn't recommend it as a stand alone.

We find Scarlett there where book one leaves off. She knows she's going to die and is determined to live life to the fullest until that last day comes. Her reaction to the entire situation is believable, especially when the surrounding circumstances are considered--and this isn't a normal death. Her doubt and occasional switch between feelings makes her more realistic and it to be expected. Still there's always a positive air to her and a lovely desire to embrace the glory of life. In other words, Scarlett is a character easy to like even when some of her decisions are a bit off. But then, decisions in such circumstances aren't easy.

The plot is wonderful and, at the same time, an odd thing in this series. On one hand, it flows at a steady pace, never too fast and never too slow. The characters are given tons of depth and even the side ones have stories of their own. Each and every character comes to life and grows on the reader as if they were real friends. So, in that way, this is a story to fall into and get lost in the pages (which I did). On the other hand, the main plot, the impending after-death and need to save the sister, is shoved off to the side completely and awaits in book three. Although this does frustrate in some ways, the book in itself is so good that buying book three is a give anyway.

Summed up, this is definitely worth a read. The character depth is amazing and the story moves along at a nice pace with heart-filled moments next to approaching tragedy and confusion. The romance is sweet, and the pending 'danger' laces every moment with a shadowing tension. Sheer action fans, waiting to dive into battle will be frustrated, but those who enjoy great characters, romance and dealing with tough situations (and a bit of paranormal on the side) will enjoy diving into these pages.
