What's Coming in February?

Wow! Did January just fly by for you, too? I'm going to blame it on the pile of wonderful reads I was buried under. If you're like me, the year starts off full-speed ahead. It's a race between meeting all those shiny new goals and having enough time to do everything. February is not going to be any less boring, especially on the reading front. Not only is there a fantastic list of reads coming up, but it's also Black History Month. Oh, and let's not forget Valentine's Day.

Are you ready to take a peek at the awesomeness headed our way?

WILL YOU ALWAYS BE HERE?

No, this cover doesn't really speak to me, but I noticed it's getting more than a few 5-star reviews. And that peaked my curiosity. This book promises to have tons of heart and starts February off with lots of emotion. You can see if I was right to take a chance on this one on the 2nd.

Picture Book

WARREN THE 13TH AND THE 13-YEAR CURSE

This is the 3rd book in a popular series (which I haven't read, yet), and there's promises of imagination, adventure and fun. The illustrations are out-of-this-world (I peeked), and so is the tale. A flying hotel? Crazy creatures as friends? Ridiculous battles against pirates and evil?
This one should be quite the ride. Find out on the 6th.

Middle Grade Fantasy

CURLS

The cover already had me wanting to learn more about this super cute girl and her love for her curls. It's also the first one up for Black History Month, and I can't think of a sweeter book to start it out with. You can get a glimpse on the 5th.

Picture Book

UNDER THE LAVENDER MOON

Can I admit the cover caught my eye on this one, too? (Yeah, I might be superficial in that way). This is the 1st in a new series about a teen, who has the power to heal through her singing. There's royalty and intrigue...oh, and some romance involved, by the looks of it. See what I think on the 10th, only a day before it's released!

Young Adult Paranormal

BEYOND

I saw this one and had to get my hands on it. Poetry combines with illustrations to take readers on a journey about the universe: black holes, dwarf planets and all sorts of amazing things. And yep, it's nonfiction! Travel to space with me on the 13th, although you can't do it on your own until April 6th.

Picture Book Nonfiction

WINGS OF EBONY

Another new series begins with this tale about a teen from Houston, who learns she has godly ancestry. I'm betting this one will be packed with action and tension and tons of girl power. We'll see on the 18th.

Young Adult Fantasy

HEAVEN'S DESIGN TEAM, VOL. 1

I can't remember the last time I hit a Manga on here, and I plan on correcting that mistake. This is the first in a humorous series, which should be chucked full of fun and silliness. Join me on the 23rd to see what I think.

Manga

ORIGINS

I'm a Brother Grimm fan and couldn't resist agreeing to take a look at this one. It's the first in a series (that seems to be a trend this month), and I honestly am not sure what to expect. Fantasy. Mystery. Romance. Something along those lines? Find out on the 26th.

Young Adult Fantasy

MORTAL REMAINS

Time for a touch of spooky and creepy! This is about a girl, who does make-up for the dead (mortuary...not walking zombies). There appears to be some mystery, romance and the task of finding out who she wants to be. I'll let you know what I think....oh, sometime this month. But it comes out on the 2nd if you want to beat me to it!

Young Adult Thriller

UNICORN ISLAND

Magic, foggy places, beasts....yep, yep, yep...this sounds perfect to me. There's adventure and mystery and kids tackling impossible things all on their own. I have no clue when I'll get to this one this month, but I will. Again, you might beat me to it because it releases on the 9th.

Middle Grade Fantasy

That's your peek at the 30 reviews I have planned this month. 30??? Yep. Now, you understand my problem. There's only 28 days in February, and I'm back-logged,. This month is going to be packed.

But isn't every month?

Guest Post: Books Banish Bullying with Laura Duncombe

Last week, a very special woman with a lovely idea reached out to me. Her mission - to bring quality books to more children. As a children book blogger/writer, there was no way I could glance the other way!

So, please welcome Laura Duncombe!

Thanks so much for having me. One of my favorite things about the internet is getting to e-meet wonderful people who I may have never crossed paths with otherwise. I’m honored to be guest-posting on Tonja’s blog.

My story starts with books. Since I was a kid, I have always loved being read to and later, reading to myself. A good story does more than entertain—it can shape your life. We all remember a book we read as a child that has stuck with us for years and years. My mother read me so many wonderful books that taught me to respect all people and cultures, take care of the earth, and think outside of the box. Those lessons made me into the adult I am today. Now that I have a child, I am very careful about what I read to him because I know that the words and stories he hears will have a huge impact on what kind of man he becomes. Simply put: I believe with all my heart in the power of books.

So, 2016 has got me pretty bummed. There’s a lot of fear and anger and hatred in the political sphere and plenty of tragedy at home and abroad. I got really tired of weeping over the evening news wishing I could build a really big bubble and shield my loved ones from any pain,  so instead I decided to do something about it. I started Books Banish Bullying with the idea that books can change lives, and that a good children’s book is really a seed for a better future. I knew that there were school libraries all over the country desperate for new books and small children who have not yet learned it’s “uncool” to love reading. If I could connect these kids and libraries with beautiful, vital books, then I would be doing my part to make sure that the future will be dominated less by hateful rhetoric and anger and more by acceptance and understanding. That’s our mission—to spread creativity, earth stewardship, and love through books.

We have a website, www.booksbanishbullying.com. On it you can find our story, as well as the list of books we are collecting. This changes often due to what’s available in hardback and suggestions from friends and readers. There’s a link to our Amazon wish list, which sends the books straight to me, as well as to our paypal site (which is used to pay shipping costs.) That’s it! It’s really easy to send us a book—just a few clicks on Amazon.

Right now we are a pretty small operation. It’s just me and my spare bedroom, which I use as an office while my baby naps. We are in the process of getting our 501.c.3 nonprofit status from the IRS, which is a fun legal jumble of paperwork. I hope we will continue to grow and grow, because I have spoken to librarians all across the country and heard their stories and I want to just shower them in books. As we evolved and develop, it has been truly amazing and awe-inspiring to see the books come in. The postwoman calls me “the book lady,” which is the best nickname ever.
To anyone out there thinking about starting a nonprofit, just go do it!! I’ve never done anything like this before but I just felt so strongly that I had to do something. If you’re feeling that in your heart, do it! I believe in you. This is your sign from the universe that now is the time.

Thanks again for having me! And thanks for all you do to share the magic of books. Book bloggers (and writers, like Tonja) are my heroes.

Earclaw and Eddie by Daniel Jude Miller

EARCLAW AND EDDIE
by Daniel Jude Miller
Dr. Jude Miller Publishing
Ages 8+

Eddie is just a regular guy trying to get by in his boring life, when out of nowhere he finds himself underneath a very unwelcome visitor. Earclaw is the unwelcome visitor and exists as nothing more than a crushing weight on Eddie's head. Faced with this permanent guest, Eddie must learn to endure, accept and possibly trick Earclaw in leaving once and for all.

E

And here he is. . .
DANIEL JUDE MILLER!!!

Dan’s story is a simple story. He grew up in a rugged logging camp of the great northwest. His father wished him to be a skilled tree-splitter but Dan didn’t have the stomach for it. Instead he headed east at age 9 with a pad of paper and 12,000 fresh, wooden pencils. The next 30 some odd years were mostly uneventful, filled with family, growth and other uninteresting stuff. Then, recently, those 12,000 pencils finally started getting put to good use.

The Buzz

"The book is really humorous. It is unique in a manner where you see the cat and dog communicating with each other about themselves, their likes, and dislikes in a letter form. The narrator's tidbits add to the charm of the book. The contrasting characters and their individual personalities have been etched well. The author has put the perspective of the pets in the forefront and written a unique and excellent book for children." ~ Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite

"We enjoyed this book tremendously! It charmed us, made us laugh, and kept us wanting to read more. A tip of the hat to the pair of pets whose rivalry leads the story along its delightful course." ~ Amazon Reviewer

My Tidbits

Cute! And totally realistic. . .well, I'm sure it is if I were a cat or a dog.

This book is a collection of the letters between Katrina the cat and Stanley the dog. We dive right into Katrina and Stanley's heads, getting to know everything about them -- their thoughts, opinions, hates, dreams -- as we follow them through their adventures. And guess what, those cats and dogs are exactly the way us humans always thought they would be!

The authors did a terrific job on letting Katrina and Stanley each develop their own distinct personality. And to make sure the letter form doesn't become too confusing, a well written narrator throws in his thoughts every now and then.

There are plenty of scenes to put a smile on the face, especially for children. My daughter and son were able to sympathize with the characters immediately. We used this book as a read-a-loud and found it works best as such. Although my son (8) was able to read it on his own, he definitely preferred to hear the characters. Summed up, this is an enjoyable dive into the thoughts of two fun pets for children 5-8 years old.
