MY TIDBITS

The wide variety of engineers and wonderful things they've done is celebrated in this bright and bold, little book.

This board book celebrates engineering and the vast variety of areas and things that includes. From Aerospace to computer to robotics and more, these pages show how diverse engineering is. (Nuclear Engineers were skipped over, something which sadden my own, awesome engineer). Anyway, one individual from each field is presented along with a short description of their accomplishment. Then, on the other side of the page, the accomplishment is illustrated and another short text explains a little more about it. There are several well-known ones and several lesser-known, which was also nice to see.

The illustrations are cheerful, easy to identify, bright and bold. These do offer a joyful atmosphere and keep it light. The thicker pages are also a plus, as this can be used for information again and again.

The only thing, which makes me stutter, is the age group. This is, supposedly for 3 to 5-year-olds, but very, very few will be able to keep up with this book. I see the picture book audience (ages 4 to 8) a much better target, since this will even be expanding the knowledge for them quite a bit. I do think it's great to expose the lower age group to this type of thing, though...it will just go way over their heads.

So, I do like this book quite a bit. I just recommend it for an older audience...and think they'll love to get their hands on a board book, anyway.

 MY TIDBITS

This is a lovely book for those readers who are ready to dive into their first chapter books.

Athena finds herself carried away by a storm into a strange land where objects and animals can speak. As she follows the Hello Brick Road, she runs across an evil Medusa, who desperately wants Athena's sandals. But a fairy insists Medusa is up to no good. Wanting only to return home, Athena heads down the road to find Zeus. But the journey isn't easy.

Greek mythology collides with The Wizard of Oz in a cute story, which holds just the right amount of adventure for more sure readers. While I expected a little bit more on the Greek mythology side, this tale still is fun and offers readers a tale with a bit of tension, lots of humor and a golden message of friendship along the way. 

The writing is just right for the intended audience. More difficult or perhaps unknown words are placed in a glossary at the end of the book. There's also a list of questions which teachers and adults can use to discuss the tale.  It's a wonderful beginning to a series, one which readers are sure to enjoy. There is a cliff-hanger type of ending, which ensures that this is a series to be read from start to finish.

 MY TIDBITS

Science and those people who made the universe around us more understandable are highlighted in this book.

On every two-page spread, a famous scientist is presented. First, there's a short four line explanation (in rhyme), and then there is a sentence or two with more detailed examples of the person's discovery. The people include a range from Isaac Newton to Grace Hopper to Jane Goodall, making sure various branches of science are addressed. At the end of the book, there's a list of more famous scientists with a small illustration of them, ending with a blank portrait frame and the word 'You'.

These pages try to include a vast variety of scientists from all fields, time frames, and cultures. It's a lovely mix, which helps young listeners to see how broad science can be. The book is written not only to be informative but also inspiring, making sure that young listeners are encouraged to seek their own discoveries.

The illustrations usually fit nicely to the person being portrayed and present them in a very friendly manner. The individuals are cheerful and support the encouraging atmosphere of the book. While there is a lot of information in these pages, the vocabulary and scientific topics mentioned are not necessarily understandable for the youngest listeners- those for whom board books are normally intended. I'm not sure kids under four will get much from this book...and even at that age, only those interested in science. Still, it's a wonderful way to introduce an important topic.

Ninjas, numbers and, best of all, tacos come to play in this sneaky little board book.

Set in rhyme, ninjas are brought to center stage as they go on a treasure hunt and come against the Samurai, who aren't ready to give the treasure free. With flips, hanging from ropes, and, for all things, flipping and sneaking in pure ninja style, these ninjas are determined to get what they want.

Small ninja fans will love this one as they follow the daring and very agile characters on a small...and sometimes smile-worthy, adventure. The rhymes flow quick, although sometimes more forced than others, and keep the pace high as the search and battle for the treasure ensues. The vocabulary is just right for the age group, and the illustrations make it perfect for a read a loud. It's a nice mix of action and fun, never too much or dangerous.

The author puts an added twist in this one, which introduces a little to beginning math. Starting with ten ninjas, the next two-page spreads do a type of countdown. First, one ninja does something, leaving nine ninjas. Then, two ninjas do something, leaving eight ninjas. The math is subtle but present enough that it could be noticed. At the end, there's a huge treat with a cute opening of doors and a gigantic taco surprise, which guarantees the book ends in sheer delight.

Honorable knights are meet up with fierce dragons in a silly and simply wonderful twist which leaves a smile on the face.

Knights are shiny in their armor and stand ready in the castle. Until the dragons come. The dragons are fierce, and everyone expects a war. That is, until the knights do something very unexpected and let the King's underwear fly. The dragons take this with shock and soon, the entire story takes on a brand, new twist.

This is such a cute book! Set in wonderful rhyme, the knights are presented with simple words, but these words are exactly enough to make them as knightful as can be. There's up and down and other simple directions slipped in among the fun. And there is fun. The king's underwear takes a clever twist to the story while adding exactly the right item to insure giggles. While the dragons and a fierce moment, the author quickly slides it back into a very age appropriate setting and weaves the entire story until it ends in a splendid message.

The illustrations are bright and hold enough details to insure hours of flipping back and forth between the pages. Especially the dragons gained a smile from my household, impressive and yet perfectly fitting to the tale.

This is a sweet book which won't only make knight and dragon friends smile. It packs a little adventure, clever fun and a message which is as honorable as the knights themselves. A huge thumbs up to this read!

Chris Dickason grew up somewhere between the canals of southwest France, the Swiss mountains, England's estuaries and amusement arcades. The youngest of four children (the 'little brother' role he still embraces in adulthood). Christ spent the majority of his education drawing on his friends' schoolbooks and was brought up oon a diet of Tom & Jerry, Swiss chocolates, cheap fizzy pop and French sunshine.

MY TIDBITS

My daughter loves this little mini-myth series. She's even dedicated a special box to to them and was so excited to get her hands on this one.

Medusa is a cute little girl with amazing hair...and a tiny bit of an attitude. She doesn't want her hair brushed, and with that amazing head-o-curl, who can blame her? I had to laugh as I remembered the days of brushing my older daughter's hair, a horrid undertaking with all those curls she had. Unlike my daughter, Medusa doesn't give in - something that will make kids laugh and perhaps, frustrate parents. The story doesn't have many words, but each one is perfect and just right. The pictures are simply fun and will have kids going through them again and again.

As a parent, I appreciate how robust the book is. My daughter has dragged these to school and everywhere, and they still are in great condition. Also, on the very back page, there's a description of Medusa written in a way children will understand. I love how this opens up kids to discussions and introduces them to the world of Greek mythology without feeling over-powering.

In my opinion, this is a must read for little kids - all of them.

MY TIDBITS

After reading the other books in this series (again and again and again, thanks to my daughter), I was a little curious to see how the author would handle Midas. Neither I nor my daughter, who's a huge fan of these books, were disappointed. Midas loves yellow and like kids sometimes do, goes to extremes. I found this story so true to life and one that will really hit home, especially when Midas' wish involves his favorite stuffed animal.

The author does a fantastic job of introducing even the youngest little readers to mythology. She takes the core of their stories and tells them in a way kids will completely understand...and see some of the characteristics in themselves. At the end, there's a short description of Midas and has experience written in a way kids will easily comprehend. It also opens up to discussions and questions, making kids already become familiar with this part of history and past cultures. .

The books are robust (my daughter's treatment of them proves that), colorful and well written. I can only recommend them.
