EXCERPT 

Time.
In the beginning, that was all there was. Seconds, minutes, hours pressed together, forming a mask of illusion that could never be dropped. A wall of steel grew around their hearts, one that couldn’t be broken. The United Misfits image could never be distorted.
It was wrong. It wasn't right. No matter what her heart told her, it was wrong. Every flutter that skated through her stomach. His every skipped heartbeat, meant nothing. She was nothing. He was nothing. They were nothing.
It had been said many times, by many different people, the most broken person in the world could hide behind a perfected smile and a fake laugh. This could carry out a person's persona, something that never even existed to begin with. That would never exist. Laughter and smiles filled with fake truths and real lies could hide what that person wanted to show, to tell, the truth.
In the end, she wanted to break free, but chains restrained her, blocking each and every move before she could make a single one, turning her into a prisoner. A captive in her own life.
Those chains squeezed tighter and tighter, never loosening their grip. They choked her from the inside, wrapping her tighter with every deceitful accusation and fake persona they put in her life. Deadly thoughts clouded her vision and stomped through her mind. Both of their minds.
Their hearts were noosed, yanked in every which direction. Like a snake. Until it all stopped. Until they both stopped fighting.
And when the fight dissipated, she could no longer turn away from the deceitful ways that they had so graciously bestowed on her.

H.L. Roberts is a short story writer and a contemporary novelist from a small town in Kentucky. She is currently in her third year of college where she is majoring in English Literature and minoring in Psychology. When she isn't reading a book you can find her raising awareness about mental illness, suicide prevention, and epilepsy.

“There’s something I have to tell you,” Jack said as they moved forward in the line.

Emma rocked on her feet as she shivered. It was colder out here than she’d thought it would be. “Okay.”
Jack stared at the ground. “Haven’t you wondered what I was really doing in the laundromat yesterday?”
“I guess I haven’t thought much about it since then. We had a whole conversation about it. You said—”
“I lied,” Jack interrupted, his eyes intense as he searched Emma’s face. “I don’t have a job at the drugstore. I needed to clean up, but I could have done that anywhere. I chose the laundromat restroom because you were there. I’m sorry I lied to you.” He looked down at the ground, guilt spreading across his face. “I was tailing you.”
Emma took a step backward, nearly bumping into the person behind her. “T–tailing me?” she whispered, hardly able to get the words out. “Why?”
There was nobody she could trust. Not one person. Maybe the police, but right here, right now, she was not safe.
Jack shoved his hands into his pockets. “My dad asked me to watch you and make sure you were okay. I was supposed to tell him if anything seemed wrong. He wouldn’t tell me why.”
Emma took another step back. The person behind her backed up too and gave her a dirty look. She looked over her shoulder, searching once again for Jack’s mysterious father. She didn’t want to meet him now. She needed to get home. Fast.
“I gotta go,” she mumbled, and turned to leave the line.
Jack grabbed her arm and let her go a second later. She wanted to run, but stopped herself when she caught the desperate pleading in Jack’s eyes. “Hear me out,” he said softly. “Please, just give me a few minutes to explain.”
Emma inched away from him. “You lied to me. After everything I’ve been through. You lied. How long have you been tailing me? What have you seen?” Her mind raced through all the scenarios of someone watching her. Had he been looking into her apartment windows from a telescope across the street? Why would his dad ask him to do something so creepy?
The more questions she came up with, the more hysterical she felt, until she finally realized she was all the way out of the ordering line and people were looking at her like she was nuts.
Jack left the line and walked calmly to her. “Dad asked me on Friday. I’ve only tailed you to the laundromat and kept an eye on your building’s front doors to see when you came and went. That’s it. All my dad said was to make sure you were safe.”
She shook her head. “It still doesn’t make sense,” she said loud and shrill enough to get more weird looks from most everybody in the line. “Why would your dad care about my safety? Did my dad ask him to do this?”
Jack locked eyes with her. “I honestly don’t know. It’s not the first time my dad’s asked me to tail someone for him. Usually it’s just to find out if some guy he’s working with is where he’s supposed to be. I know it sounds crazy I’d do things like that for him, but he’s my dad, and none of it’s been dangerous so far.” He looked down at his feet. “You’re the first girl he’s ever asked me to tail. He seems genuinely concerned for you.”
Emma folded her arms, hysteria giving way to anger. She could run away and tell the cops Jack and his father were drug-dealing stalkers, or she could stay and maybe get some answers about who her father really was and why he’d been living a lie for who knew how long. She looked around the brightly-lit sidewalk full of restaurant patrons and decided to stay.

MY TIDBITS

I received one of these monthly boxes for my daughter (age 10), and both of us would peek into the mail box every day. A package is always an exciting thing! When the package arrived, it was a nice box with the words 'Little Fun Club' printed on the outside.

Inside, there was another package, this time wrapped in brown paper with a neat blue bow. This included three hardback, high quality books. 

The first was  Newberry Prize holder: The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. This was released on January 2015 by Dial Books and is an historical fiction tale at around 320 pages. 

The second was The Desperate Adventures of Zeno & Alya by Jane Kelley. This was released inOctober 2013 by Feiwel & Friends and is an adventure with animals characters as well at around 200 pages.

The third, and my daughter's favorite by far, was Princess Juniper of the Hourglass by Ami-Joan Paquette. This one came out in July 2015 by Philomel Books and is a fantasy at around 270 pages.

From the economical side, the bundle saved a few dollars. All three books together would have cost around $37 through Amazon, which makes for a savings of around $8 (about 20%) for the single month's price of $29. For the six month rate, it would be $12 (around 32%) So money wise, this box deserves a definite thumbs up!

As to the selection, these are all well rated books, which have earned a fair amount of attention. The quality is top and the selection hits a wide, general range of genres for the gender and age group. My own daughter isn't so fond of historical fiction and was skeptical about the animal adventure one as well, but according to the website, the interests of the specific child can be noted in the order to help insure that their individual wishes better met.

The only thing which was a little disappointing was the plainness of the packaging paper. Even with the blue bow, the brown paper doesn't inspire excitement or give the impression that reading is a joyful undertaking. 

All in all, this is a good deal for young bookworms and is a great way to expand on reading material, while finding new gems along the way. With summer vacation around the corner, it does offer something for kids to look forward to.

Ginna Moran is the author of the Falling into Fame, Demon Within, Destined for Dreams, and Finding Nate series. She lives in Austin, Texas but is originally from Southern California.
