What's Coming in May?

Well hello, May! April was a bit busier than I expected, so I'm curious if May will keep up this pace. I have a sneaking suspicion it will...on many fronts. Many.

As for the reading pile, I have several science fiction reads this month. Yep, scifi is definitely popping up more this year than I've seen in a long while, which is a nice change-up. There's a few humorous reads, a couple graphic novels, a little fantasy, and a bunch of books, which hit some unique directions, too. It's as if the kidlit world is spreading its wings in many directions, right now, which I'm super excited to see.

I quickly went through my schedule to see exactly what genres this month's books hit, and it is surprisingly broad. While I'll have around 5 contemporary reads, 4 are scifi, 3 humor, 3 nonfiction, 3 fantasy, 3 graphic novels, a couple romance, bedtime books, animal fiction, ghost stories...as said, it's really all over the place. Plus, I have a few more young adult titles than usual...guess I'll be making up for the last few months, when I didn't have quite as many.

Here's a glimpse at some of the reads on my schedule, so you can see how exciting it will be.

SKY BOY

I'm starting the month with a bit of excitement and diving into a brand new, scifi series for young adults. This one is said to hold tons of action and tension with some intrigue, too. I'm looking forward to seeing where this one goes, since scifi is always a rare find for this age group. As said, I'll be tackling this one right away on the 1st.

Young Adult Science Fiction

HOW TO GET AN ALLIGATOR OUT OF THE BATHTUB

The title caught my eye on this read. Plus, I want to see how the kids handle an alligator who enjoys pink/purple soap bubbles. I'm expecting quite a bit of silliness and ridiculous predicaments, but maybe, I'm wrong, and this read will hold something completely different. Be careful because I'm going to peer into this one on the 4th.

Picture Book

KITTY-CORN CLUB: PARTS OF US

It was the cover, again. I have such a soft-spot for fun covers, and this one promises tons of chaos. It's a read for the youngest out there and will present various parts of these characters' bodies. I'm betting that means some animal knowledge in a very fun and imaginative way. I'm excited to learn more about this one and tell you all about it on the 9th.

Board Book

LOVE, CANTER, ACTION

Can't have summer without a young adult romance, right? First, the title caught my attention. Then, it was the cover with the horseback riders...maybe, because we have more than a few horse people surrounding us. Honestly, I'm hoping this one takes a slightly, original twist, while keeping the romance formula so many enjoy. That always makes for a nice read on the beach for romance fans. I'll be hitting this one on the 13th.

Young Adult Romance

THE ELK HUNT

This is the first in a series, which released in 2013. This one grabbed my interest because... 1) Hunting is huge in our area. Kids even get a day off from school to go with their parents. So I'm a bit curious how this book handles things, since I know several kids who would read it. 2) It's actually about the relationship between a 72-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy. If I understood things correctly, the hunting aspect simply acts as a foundation for the two to spend time together. Instead, this one should pack words of wisdom and growth. I'll be taking a look at it on the 15th.

Middle Grade Fiction

THIRSTY GROUND

See, another scifi read! This one takes a look at an arid planet and a spaceship with the last of the human race aboard in search of water. Not only will it, no doubt, include some tension and danger, but it also involves difficult secrets, and the deliberation of doing something wrong to achieve good. In other words, it'll probably dance in the knowledge that not every decision is black and white. I'll be shooting off to the stars with this one on the 20th.

Young Adult Science Fiction

THERE MIGHT BE LOBSTERS

Summer's on the way, which means beach-time for some readers out there. I just love the cover—the dog, the girl, flailing into the water... And if there is a lobster involved, that'd be great! I'm not sure there really is, or maybe it will hit with a wave of humor. I'm ready to meet this character and discover more on the 21st.

Picture Book

WILDCATS VOL. 1

This is the first in a new, graphic novel series, which involves a group of friends, who have the ability to transform into wild cats. They take on evil, battle secrets, save the world (?)....or something like that. I'm just hoping for some fun adventure, and this one sounds like something, which the middle grade audience might enjoy. If it's done right, of course. And that's what I'm going to find out and share my thoughts with you on the 23rd.

Middle Grade Fantasy  /    Graphic Novel

THE KISS BET, VOL. 2

I reviewed the first one in this series awhile back and enjoyed it. It was playful, sweet, romantic, and just put a smile on the face. I'm assuming the second volume will deliver much of the same...but with new characters? I'm not sure, but I'm ready to find out. Plus, I might as well pick-up another graphic novel and keep the ball rolling for a bit. I'll be sharing this one on the 28th.

Young Adult Romance   /    Graphic Novel

THE LAST SEED KEEPER

This is the first in a new series, and it released already in March...so you can get your hands on it even before I get a chance to take a peek. In this one, the planet has all but died leaving little nature left. Two girls, coming from very different circumstances, need to learn to get along, discover secrets, and begin to save the world (?). I'm taking a look at it on the 30th.

Middle Grade Science Fiction

Every month, I have more books I want to read than I have time for. Since my schedule does change due to...well, all sorts of reasons, I can always slide another read in. This is where my Joker Read comes in. The Joker Read is the book, which is on top of my pile, waiting for a chance to work its way into my calendar. I just don't know when.

THE ART OF EXILE

This is the first in a brand new series, which releases this month. The second I saw it, I had to get my fingers on a copy. But my schedule was already full! So, I'm gripping it tight and waiting for a spot to slide open and squish it in. It's sold as Legendborn meet The Da Vinci Code. And it slides in aspects of an Academy story. I'm hoping that it will be a grabbing read, and hopefully will find out soon.
