Mommy and Daddy's Day with Kill Code by Clive Fleury

Every so often here on Bookworm for Kids, I have a Mommy and Daddy's day post. After all, parents like to read too. The books I place on here do not have content any more mature than those for young adult audiences (unless I comment otherwise). In other words, these aren't books you need to hide under the bed.
This time, I got my fingers on a quick-paced, dystopian read, since I loved the idea of an ex-cop facing one of these worlds. That it wasn't overly thick on pages, was a huge bonus...because sometimes, we as parents only have time for a quick read.

KILL CODE
by Clive Fleury
TCK Publishing
Science Fiction/Dystopian
220 pages

WHEN THE OCEANS RISE...THE TRUTH DROWNS
It's the year 2031. Our future. Their present. A world decimated by climate catastrophe, where the sun's heat is deadly and the ocean rises higher every day. A world ruled by the rich, powerful, and corrupt. A world where a good man can't survive for long.
Hogan Duran was a good man once. He was a cop, forced to resign in disgrace when he couldn't save his partner from a bullet. Now Hogan lives on the fraying edges of society, serving cruel masters and scavenging trash dumps just to survive.
But after four years of living in poverty, Hogan finally gets a chance to get back on his feet. He's invited to join the National Security Council, the powerful paramilitary organization responsible for protecting the rich and powerful from the more unsavory elements of society. All he needs to do is pass their deadly entrance exam, and he'll be rewarded with wealth and opportunity beyond his wildest dreams.
But this ex-cop's path to redemption won't be easy. The NSC are hiding something, and as Hogan descends deeper and deeper into their world, he starts to uncover the terrible truth of how the powerful in this new world maintain their power...and just how far they will go to protect their secrets.
In a world gone wrong, can one man actually make a difference, or will he die trying?
Kill Code is the first novel in an exciting new dystopian science fiction series from the mind of the award-winning author, screenwriter, and director Clive Fleury.
Fans of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, and Divergent by Veronica Roth will be captivated by Kill Code.

MY TIDBITS

Ex-cop with baggage meets a futuristic, tough world, where lies run deep and justice is only a mirage—what's not to love?

Guilt hangs heavy on Hogan Duran after he watches his partner get shot. Even years later, he's struggling to get by in a world which has fallen apart. When he receives the acceptance to try out for the NSC, the ruling body and enforcement, he finally has the chance he's been waiting for to drag himself out of the misery, but the training isn't what anyone expects. Soon, he finds himself not only pressed to his limits in every way but facing a reality he never guessed existed.

This world was as nitty-gritty as I'd hoped. A fallen society, which barely gets by after a world-wide disaster, creates a harsh background and is perfect for the main character, ex-cop Hogan Duran. He's suffering from guilt of an earlier incident, takes care of his ex-partner, and does his best to survive. In other words, he draws sympathy right away. Of course, he's harboring a ton of talent, determination and sense for right and wrong...and this makes him the perfect hero with everything the reader needs to cheer for him.

From the very first page, the hardship and danger sinks in. There's never a boring moment as Duran is faced with one situation after the other. The hints at intrigue start out light and grow as the story continues, making it impossible to guess where everything is going. The tension and danger builds from page to page, and while the logic is fairly smooth, there are several times the information suddenly hits out of nowhere with a lack of woven introduction. It soon becomes clear why the book is so short despite the complex plot—it bounces without smoothing things in. This also affects some of the characters and their relations, and outside of Duran, leaves the other characters without much depth. A little more would have done a lot. The writing itself is more than solid and a treat to read...and that's what makes this book hard to put down.

Still, it was a quick, fun read and opens up a world, which has tons of potential. The ending packs more than a few surprises and leaves off with just as many questions as answers, making it hard not to grab up book two and find out what happens next.

SNEAK PEEK

They were there in the shadows again. This was the third time this week I had thought someone was watching me.
The last few weeks, I’d heard the rustling of leaves and the crackling sound of old fallen branches beneath someone’s feet, or the hairs at the back of my neck would stand straight because I knew someone stood silently behind me. Last night wasn’t any different. I exited my car after an exhausting day at work and heard what sounded like a low, deep exhale coming from the forest next to Lily’s house. I swiftly turned around, fumbling with the flashlight on my phone, but when the light pierced the darkness, the sound stopped.
Tonight, it was a silhouette behind my aunt Lily’s fence in the backyard. It wasn’t someone walking by with their dog or a neighbor taking out their trash. They were standing there, staring, as I walked to the sink to rinse my dinner bowl. I wasn’t going to tell her again. She’d just tell me what she’d told me last time I brought it up. She’d say I was just seeing things and that it was normal to feel this way after trauma.
“Your turn, Mercy,” Lily said. Her voice pulled my gaze from the window.
“I’m coming,” I said, taking one last glance toward the silhouette.
They were gone.

.

MY TIDBITS

Life's super speed takes a well, needed break in this very relatable tale.

Get up, run to the bus, hurry to class... The day goes on and on, faster and faster as this child does its best to make it through the day. But after the work is done, life flips and maybe, doesn't have to be as fast as thought.

Almost every child will relate to this book. From the minute morning starts, the day hurries by as the school routine takes over. The constant hectic to do everything, which is expected is brought across very clearly. The kid in these pages rushes to and fro in the exact same way most listeners do themselves. When everything switches gear and slows down, listeners will again identify with the fun play and relaxation bring. The difference between fast and slow is obvious, and the message behind it too.

The illustrations bring across the hectic motion, set familiar scenes and add a tiny, dash of light-heartedness, too. But there's also the sense of empathy. It's a sweet picture book, which encourages listeners to take a break every now and then because these are just as important as the constant hurrying about.

Review: Yoga at the Zoo by Teresa Anne Power

YOGA AT THE ZOO
Little Mouse Adventures, #1
by Teresa Anne Power
Illustrated by Emma Allen
Stafford House Books
Picture Book / Yoga for Kids
17 pages
ages 3 and up

Lovable, curious Little Mouse is here to help kids use yoga to solve problems and manage emotions in Yoga at the Zoo, the first book in the Little Mouse Adventures series from international bestselling author and Kids' Yoga Day creator, Teresa Power!

Little Mouse and his family live in a cozy burrow nestled in young Tammy McDoodle's backyard. Tammy and her mother love to practice yoga together, and Little Mouse loves to follow along. In this beautifully illustrated picture book, adorable Little Mouse, along with Tammy's wise and lovably lazy cat, Mr. Opus, follow Tammy on a field trip to the zoo and meet new animal friends, while learning simple yoga poses along the way. A new story-time and bedtime favorite, Yoga at the Zoo gently imparts important lessons about friendship, dealing with new situations, and meeting new people. Kids will delight in the adventures of Little Mouse and Mr. Opus, while parents and educators will love watching children apply their new-found yoga skills to quiet their minds and manage stressful situations.

MY TIDBITS

Cute characters and a laid-back, fun setting create a wonderful atmosphere for young listeners to learn a tiny bit about yoga.

Little Mouse lives in a burrow and has a warm, calm life. His best friend, Mr. Opus, is a cat next door and sometimes, they watch the family there practice yoga. Sometimes, Little Mouse even tries the poses himself. When the girl goes to the zoo on a school field trip, he and Mr Opus tag along—Little Mouse is so curious about the other animals! There they not only meet new friends but have a little fun as well.

Little Mouse and his friend, Mr Opus, the cat, are a lovely duo. The book starts with a quick glance at Little Mouse's life in the burrow and visiting Mr. Opus. While many yoga books for kids concentrate heavy on the yoga and dive right in, this one takes more of a traditional tale form, allowing Little Mouse and Mr. Opus to develop as true characters. There's a lovely plot as Little Mouse gets a chance to take his first trip to the zoo...leaving yoga as a secondary message, which slides right along with the tale.

The illustrations are very well done and add lots of little details. We enjoyed just gazing at these and enjoying each scene. The characters are nicely depicted and the tale comes to life on every page.

As to the yoga, this book surprised me. While yoga is definitely present and listeners will want to try the poses themselves, the aspect is actually pretty subtle. It's lightly explained that yoga calms and helps clear the mind, but this is built wonderfully into the story and not preached. The different poses aren't delivered in clear, instructive form, but also flow right along with the story. For example, the giraffe stretches his neck to eat leaves, speaks to Little Mouse, who then stretches his neck too. But it's built in so seamlessly, that it's not blatantly clear that they are illustrating a yoga pose. Especially young listeners are lead into yoga in this way without feeling like they're being forced.

This is a great introduction to a series, and it will be fun to see where it goes next and how the author continues in this path.
