SILVERWOOD
Silverwood, Book 1
by Betsy Streeter
Light Messages Publishing LLC
YA Science Fiction
320 Pages

A story of finding where you belong, even if it involves time travel, shape shifting, and hacking.
Helen Silverwood, fourteen, is sick of life on the run with her mom and her younger brother. Nothing makes sense. She doesn’t understand why she has recurring dreams of shape-shifting creatures, why her mother is always disappearing, and how her brother can draw things that haven’t happened yet. Most of all, Helen longs to know what happened to her dad—is he imprisoned, a fugitive, or gone forever?
When someone blows up the apartment where Helen lives, the stories of the ancient Silverwood clan—and her role in it—begin to unravel. All Helen wants is to feel like there’s someplace she belongs—but getting there will prove very, very complicated.

A young couple stumbles out the back door of a nightclub into a narrow alleyway that would look a whole lot worse in the daytime. Distant streetlights reveal a hint of the garbage strewn around, and the shadows mask the dilapidated state of the surrounding buildings. The door itself sits in the mouth of a giant, cartoonlike face spray painted on the wall.
Deafening music and red-orange light shoots out the door while it is open, bouncing off the alley walls, and muffles again as the door closes to just a crack. There is no knob on the outside of the door; someone has wedged in a piece of wood to hold it open.
The couple start out laughing and joking, leaning on each other – their shape is all skinny jeans and mohawks mixed with the glint of jewelry – but shortly their voices turn more argumentative. Maybe someone committed an offense, perhaps there's a breakup in progress. Soon the young woman breaks away from her date, pries open the door, and storms back into the club. Loud music and lights again, muffled and dark again. The young man leans his back against the wall, his arms crossed in anger. He needs a minute to collect himself.
A lone figure comes down the alley. Unusually tall, dressed in a dark coat, crushing garbage under its motorcycle boots. Lit from behind by the street lights, it resembles a shadow that has come loose from the wall. The young man is too distracted with replaying the conversation of a few minutes ago in his head, trying to figure out what he said wrong, to notice that the figure has come within a few feet of him.
“You know you really ought not to be out here at this late hour,” the figure says.
The young man jumps, then regains himself. “Yeah, whatever.” Who is this guy telling him what to do. The only people who go out back by themselves are the ones who want to be, by themselves.
Before the young man can add anything – like a string of expletives – a needle-like protrusion shoots out from the figure's forearm and directly into the young man's abdomen.
The young man freezes, stares straight ahead, then looks his assailant in the face. It's a pale face, the face of a Tromindox that has not fed in some time. The victim tries to push off from the wall, but the venom deadens his arms and legs. He slides downward into a sitting position. His skin turns black, his spiky hair becomes a mass of tentacles. Soon there is nothing left of him but a terrified pair of eyes in a puddle of writhing black.
The Tromindox reels in its prey, like a glob of oil pulling in a wayward drop. Satisfied that it has the upper hand, the creature takes on a more humanlike form, turns and shuffles away. It is already buzzing with energy from all of these new thoughts.
The door scrapes open again, the bright light temporarily blocked by a fat man in an undershirt heaving a huge bag of garbage into the trash bin. He takes a quick look up and down the alley, wipes his hands on his pants, and goes back in.
Later, the young woman will come back out and see that her date has left. She will take this as a sign that they have broken up, and will not call him for a week. It won’t be until he has missed several days at work that someone will unlock his untouched apartment, see that no one has been there, and file a missing persons report.

EXCERPT

He glared up at me with pure red raging eyes and he let out a battle cry. Striking back at me with his eternal flame, I was tossed back by his flames, only to regain my footing. I unleashed my flames as they both intertwined like two rabid dogs snarling and shoving back and forth. I could see the struggle on Cael’s face.
I continued to push and push, feeling my fire rise and rise, growing hungrier than ever. No longer red, orange, and blue, but now blue and orange. Everything I saw around me was now blood red. I no longer heard the voices of the crowd making ooh’s and ahh’s. I no longer heard Julius calling out to me or anyone else for that matter. I only felt the power surging within me, swirling around like a tsunami with turmoil.
I raised my arms out by my sides, letting every ounce of my fire burst out of me straight toward Cael like a freight train. It pounded down into him like boulders falling from the sky. Cael couldn’t resist the intensity of my fire as he retracted his eternal fire back within him. I let my flames bite into him, burning every ounce of him from head to toe, hearing him scream out in pain. I pulled back, feeling myself depleting. Fighting to stay fully engulfed, I walked over and stood over Cael’s badly incinerated body. I could see his body slowly mending back together. “Do you agree to my terms?” I asked firmly. He lay on the ground, breathing in shallow breaths glaring up at me with slitted eyes.
I turned and started to walk away, calling back my flames like a vacuum. I was prepared to be visibly naked before the entire coven, only to look down and see that I was not. I still wore my mother’s battle gear and boots.
Fireproof?
Famished by all the power I just used, I wanted nothing more than for this to be over. I was glad to finally end this. I looked up at Julius, who was not too far ahead smiling at me. I smiled back, exhausted. His face instantly changed to a fearful, shocked look, I could see his eyes averting to behind me. I could not hear him scream, but only saw his mouth moving— shouting out something.
I knew then it was now or never. I had a split second to react to what I knew was inevitable. What I should have done the minute I had the chance. I pulled the god killer blade free from my waist and ducked as I spun. A breeze passed over my head as he swung his arm out aiming straight for my head with his dagger. I arced my arm up with my blade and drove it straight into his heart. His eyes widened as he gasped.
My face morphed into my dark rage. Black spidery veins cascaded down my face with my fangs extended out and my eyes glowing bright. “Didn’t they ever tell you to never stab someone when they have their back to you? There’s no honor in that!” I growled.
I pulled out the blade for him to see that it was the same one he intended to use on me once. I

plunged it deep into his heart again. “I think you lost something and I’m returning it to its owner.” I

plunged it into his chest again. “This is for my coven!” I plunged it into his chest once again. “This is

for Audrey!” Ripping open his chest as he screamed out in agony. He started chocking on his own

blood. “And this is for my mother!”

“Why are you here?” Lilith asked. “You’ve already got your life seal.”

“I have more questions for Istulo.” She continued to stare at the disk.

Lilith sighed. “My name is Lilith. What’s your name?”

Her shoulders relaxed slightly. A hint of a smile broke out on her face. Her upturned nose wiggled. “She-Aba. I was born here in the Black Land. Both my parents arrived from Atlantis fourteen years ago yesterday. My mother gave birth to me the next day.”

Lilith perked up. “That would make today your birthday!”

She-Aba beamed. “Yes. That’s why I’m here. For my birthday last year, I had my life reading done by Istulo. But recently, there’s been a hiccup in my plans. It’s like my life seal rearranged itself, and now I’m confused. I’m here for a reaffirmation.”

“What’s the problem?”

She-Aba traced her life seal with the tip of her perfectly shaped fingernail. “My lifetime occupation was supposed to be to design clothing for the people of the various positions in the court and temples.”

Lilith smirked. “That makes perfect sense.”

“I know, right? So why, all of a sudden, would my life seal change from designing clothing to something completely different?”

Lilith arched a fair brow. “How different?”

“Well, instead of clothing people in lavish robes and gowns for others to appreciate, the seal suggests that I’ll be doing the opposite by covering up and hiding the truth. I don’t understand it at all. I thought my life was all planned out for me.”

“I thought mine was too, until my country blew up and slid into the ocean,” Lilith muttered.

“Hey, look at the bright side, at least your hair isn’t red like mine.”

Lilith eyed She-Aba carefully. “What’s wrong with red hair? My uncle has red hair and it suits him fine.”

She-Aba moved in closer. “If you haven’t noticed already, there aren’t many redheads around here. The natives think red is magical, and anyone with red hair is considered a freak of nature.”

“That’s ridiculous!” Lilith said loud enough to cause an echo down the marble hallway. “Is that the reason why those artists were rude to you? Because you have red hair?”

“Red is a very powerful color,” a raspy voice said from behind both girls.

Lilith and She-Aba jumped. They slowly turned to find Istulo hovering over them.

Wearing the same white gown and orichalcum headband Lilith saw her dressed in before, Istulo nodded slightly before she said, “Red represents the essence of life—if we are drained of blood, we are drained of energy. The people of the Black Land understand this, and therefore red is reserved only for their gods and goddesses.”

Lilith giggled. “Don’t tell She-Aba that, she’ll think she’s a goddess.”

Review: Like Candy by Debra Doxer with Giveaway

LIKE CANDY
The Candy Series #1
by Debra Doxer
YA Romance Mystery
299 Pages

Revenge is sweet, just like candy.

Candy Seaborne knows she’s badass. She takes after her father, an assassin and possibly a spy, although he won’t admit to either. She idolizes him. Her dream is to follow in his footsteps. But first, she has to finish high school.
Biding her time, waiting for real life to begin, Candy craves drama and isn’t above manufacturing some. If you’re a classmate who wronged her or a boyfriend who cheated, watch your back. She’s no pushover, and revenge may be her favorite pastime.
Jonah Bryson is the senior class heartthrob who breaks all the stereotypes. He’s a jock, but he isn’t the typical player. He’s moody and antisocial. No girl has gotten anywhere with him since his last girlfriend broke his heart.
Candy sees Jonah as a challenge and the perfect distraction. But she may be in over her head because unlike everyone else, Jonah isn’t buying her tough act. He sees the lost, lonely girl inside. He sees too much. When he looks at her that way, she wants to let her guard down and be vulnerable. But that’s the last thing she should do because her father’s world is spilling over into hers, and life is about to get real much sooner than Candy expected.

MY TIDBITS

After reading the blurb, I wasn't sure this would be something for me or not, but I decided to take the chance. I'm glad I did.

What a fun book! It starts off as if there should have been a book even before this one (and I hope someday there might be), catapulting the reader right along with Candy into a new school and new situation. At first, this came over like a teeny revenge novel--high school drama, girls/boy problems, and snobby popular girls who ate lunch with stereo-type jock guys. And although this does sum up some of the story, it doesn't do it justice.

There's a lot going on. Candy is a multi-faceted character who on one hand, seeks her revenge in a spiteful and extreme way, but on the other side, is so normal and level-headed that she's hard not to like. Her rough past has made her who she is, and it's someone who can stick up when they have to but isn't bitter or beaten. I found her refreshing along with most of the side-characters. Although some characters are shallow, others have tons of depth which draws in and demands sympathy.

The plot in this book sucked me in and didn't let go. Even though it seems a little superficial at first, the story deepens quickly into a type of action-spy thriller. . .but at high school level. There are tons of twists and turns which I never saw coming, and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. In other words, this was one of those books I regretted putting down to get other things done.

I enjoyed the romance, very hesitant and not full-fledged love at first sight as is often seen for this intended audience. Friendship and trust are pushed into the front row, over-powering instant desire. But as much as this aspect is one of Candy's best personality traits, it's also one of her biggest flaws. The author did a terrific job at weaving this into the story and maintaining it as a constant string until the very end.

I was a little disappointed to see how fast Candy was to draw judgement in the end (didn't completely fit her character up until that point) and the last twists were a little predictable, but that didn't stop me from loving the book and her story. Which lead to my next and biggest disappointment--not being able to get my hands on book 2 yet. There's a cliff-hanger ending (something I'm never wild about), but worse, I can't find out what happens next. Not yet.

Two thumbs up for this one!
