This Book is Boring! by Ron Keres

Today's read comes from an entire row of picture books surrounding this frog. I haven't...as far as I remember...picked one up before. Since it is so popular, I thought I'd take a peek and see what this upcoming addition is all about. I'm expecting a bit of interaction with the reader and tons of humor.

Let's see how it goes!

MY TIDBITS

Boredom is a word this frog refuses to accept...even if it causes tons of nonsense along the way.

This is a very interactive book, meaning that the frog speaks directly to the reader as if they were right there. The frog also requests the reader to do things with it, so it gets listeners/readers involved and makes sure they don't feel disconnected. While it is possible to pull a message about boredom from these pages and how, usually, it's more a state of mind and an individual can not be bored if they give some effort, this book is mostly about humor and fun.

The illustrations are bright and leave the white page background behind the frog with only enough extras to make the various situations come to life (like a stack of board games). This helps to keep listeners focused on the frog and his interaction with the reader. The text is simple and consists of the frog speaking to the reader...or spitting its thoughts. It creates a lovely read-aloud and works for those readers who know their words to pick up on their own.

It is funny and will draw even reluctant listeners in. Plus, it gives the adult reader a chance to let their reading skills shine as they add emphasis to the frog's statements as desired and can coax the listener to join in. So, it is very interactive on that front. The only thing which bothered me a bit was that the frog is always assuming listeners' reactions. For example, they should catch a baseball he throws, but he claims they don't or that he requests they dance with him and claims they didn't. There are enough listeners who will grow frustrated, since they will pretend to catch the ball and will be more than happy to dance right along.

Otherwise, this is a fun read and I understand why young readers enjoy this character so much.

This Book Is Mine! by Ron Keres

Did everyone survive yesterday? I hope all of you had a wonderful day and time to celebrate the joyous occasion. While we had the normal, energetic family get-together (it's never quiet), we also didn't ignore the reason for Christmas. Every year, we read the birth found in Luke on Christmas Eve, but this year, we had a special twist on that end on Christmas Day as my daughter re-read the Bible verse, but this time, in a Hawaiian Pidgin translation. So, we learned a bit of cultural goodness along the way, too.

Today's read seemed like a refreshing splash of humor and fun to wake me up from my overly-stuffed-with-sweets slumber. This book is part of a collection of reads surrounding the frog on the cover...number 6 or 7 or something like that (?)...but it's the first time I've run across it. The title and cover caught my attention, since it looks exactly like something my kids would have enjoyed when they were 3 or 4 years old.

Let's open it up and see if it's as silly as I hope it is!

MY TIDBITS

Sibling bicker and silliness mount with every page to create chaos to smile with the entire way through.

Finn the Frog is getting ready for his sister's first visit to this book, which he now calls his own. He has everything shiny clean and is super excited when she knocks at the door. But his sister is a force to be reckoned with and, immediately, takes control of everything. Finn does his best to stop her, which breaks out into one little argument after the other.

It's a cute read, which draws the reader in, especially since Finn and his sister speak directly to the reader several times. In this tale, the book is the frog's home...something which works quite nicely and packs imagination. When Finn's sister comes in, the clash with the calmness hits hard and immediately draws smiles. It's clear that the sister is going to cause all sorts of stress, and that Finn is going to have troubles dealing with it. The back-and-forth between the two isn't only silly but reminds of the usual sibling situations, which can arise, especially when they hold very different temperments. Still, there's a sense of 'love' which can't be missed. It also shows that despite the huge clash, they'd never think of really parting from the other. So, there's a nice bit of sibling goodness right along with the humor.

The artwork is well done and brings each scene across well. It's enjoyable to flip through the pages and follow the story just through this visual tale. As for the text, it's not light but fits well to slightly older audiences (5 and up). It works nicely as a read-aloud. As for a read-alone, readers will need a fairly good grip of their words. Plus, the dialogue between the characters is shown through colors in the font. When the sister speaks, the words hold a pink direction, while Finn's are black. It took me a second to realize what was going on when I first read it. Also, the frogs refer to the reader as 'kid', which will work with some listeners better than others.

It's a fun tale, which is sure to put a smile on the right listeners' faces.
