SNEAK PEEK

As we watch the boys, the wind picks up, making the fern lay flat, exposing us. We gasp and make a dash for the closest tree. Behind it, we huddle together.

Boogles! A branch just hit me,” Weedy says.

The sky turns black. Wind swirls dust and leaves, and spits pebbles at us. This is not good. We have to get going now or else our payback will get blown away.

Let’s go!” I scream and lead the group from behind the tree, but the wind makes it hard for us to move forward.

Rose and Lilly grab hands as they run, screaming, toward the creek. Lacey stumbles over a fallen twig, landing flat and hitting her face hard on the ground. When she doesn’t move, I race to her as sand and pine needles prick my skin.

I help Lacey to her feet. Luckily, she only has a few cuts on her face. A tiny bit of blood streaks down her forehead. She looks at me. Fear is bright in her eyes. She needs help. We all need help. I peer toward the creek. The boys are still there, frantically trying to lift the bag full of stones.

Shouting a warning and waving my arms, I hurry to the creek, trying to get their attention. Finally, Dusty sees me. He looks as if he’s been caught with his hand in the pixie jar.

I point to the sky and wave them to come our way. Rain starts to fall. Dusty pulls Moss from the creek. Fat drops of water pelt my head and wings as I wait for the boys to reach me.

It must be a twisty!” Dusty screams. “We better find shelter.”

Elaine Kaye Interviews Dusty the Fairy

Elaine Kaye is interviewing Dusty, one of the fairies in Bad Fairy Strikes Again, Book 2 in A Bad Fairy Adventure series. Dusty is Moss’s best friend and Thistle’s ex-bully. Now, Thistle and Dusty are good friends, but ssh! They don’t want their friends to know that just yet.

Elaine: Have you and Thistle done anything exciting lately?

Dusty: We went on a stakeout!

Elaine: A stakeout where?

Dusty: At an old abandoned house in the woods by the library. Brownies used to live there, but they left a long time ago.

Elaine: But why did you and Thistle have a stakeout?

Dusty: We wanted to find out what Viner and Needles were up to.

Elaine: And did you?

Dusty: *rubs his hands together* We sure did!

Elaine: *waiting* Well, are you going to tell everyone?

Dusty: No way! They’ll just have to read Bad Fairy Strikes Again to find that out. Isn’t that why you wrote about Thistle’s adventure in the first place?

Elaine: That is why I wrote it. You’re right.

Dusty: It sure was exciting, though.

Elaine: Were you scared?

Dusty: A little, but I had my friends there with me—Thistle, Moss, Lacey, and Rose.

Elaine: The five of you make a good team.

Dusty: *smiles* We do. We’re always ready for an adventure.

Elaine: And I’ll always be ready to write about your adventures.

SNEAK PEEK

We are nearing the edge of our village limits when we see the abandoned house hidden in tall weeds. The night grows darker as we huddle in a fern thicket. “It sure is spooky out here,” Lacey whispers and shifts closer to Moss.

“Let's move in closer,” Dusty says. “Moss and Lacey, you go to the other side of the house. Find a crack in the wall to see inside. Thistle and Rose follow me.” He looks back at Moss. “If you see anything strange, flick your flashlight on and off three times.”

“Then what?” Rose asks, munching on another berry.

“We’ll meet…um…” Dusty looks around and then points. “Over by that fern thicket. Is everyone clear?”

We nod and fly as low to the ground as we can. Once we reach our positions, we hunker down and wait. Time goes by as slow as a worm while we wait. It gets darker. After a while, boredom creeps in.

“What's that?” Rose points behind us.

Dusty and I turn to see a shadow coming out of the woods, heading straight for us. Boogles! No, wait. There are two shadows!

Holiday Review: Sleigh Ride by Elaine Kaye

Christmas is coming!!! (As if you didn't know) And what's Christmas without some fitting, holiday reads? I have more than a couple lined up before Christmas Day is here and will be marking these with 'Holiday Review'. After all, not all reads are for the holidays, either.

The first one up is directed toward children, ages 5 to 8.

A Gregory Green Adventure Series:
Pea Soup Disaster
Doctor Mom
Halloween Ride

MY TIDBITS

I've read several of the books in this series and appreciate the author's quick, simple and down-to-earth story telling...and that while telling a tale, which kids enjoy listening to. While it's not necessary to read any of these before hitting this book, I did find that there is little to no introduction concerning Gregory or his bear, Sammy, in this one. So, I would recommend grabbing up one of the others in the series first to give kids a heads-up on the characters. Still, this is a cute Christmas tale and can be read alone, too.

There's a noise in the room...or was there? Sammy's certain he heard it, and sure enough, they find Santa standing there. He read Gregory's letter and wants to grant his wish, but doing so will include an exciting adventure.

I love this pair of characters. Gregory is a very average, curious boy, who is caring and, above all, loves his bear, Sammy. The idea of having the stuffed animal and him go on adventures together is something I could have related to very well as a kid...and something my own kids have enjoyed as well. The story is pretty short and just right for a cuddle in the chair or bedtime read. I do recommend this one as a read-aloud, since the text is a little much for first readers. Those who have a good handle on words won't have any trouble with it, though. I do wish that one or two sections were a bit more built out and not quite as rushed, but for a short dab into Christmasy thoughts, it's a fun read.

The story stays on a very traditional, Santa path, which I also appreciate. It awakes the Christmas feeling and fits well with the excitement kids have for the holidays. Plus, those who dream of Santa will wish they could join Gregory on his adventure.

Guest Post with Elaine Kaye and Bad Fairy with Giveaway!

BAD FAIRY
A Bad Fairy Adventure (Book One)
by Elaine Kaye
The Wild Rose Press
Fantasy Middle Grade
66 pages
ages 8-12

Thistle Greenbud is not a bad fairy. She simply doesn't like rules,
and it's just her luck that her homework is to create a new rule for the fairy
handbook. But first, she has more important things to do. Like figure out
how to get back at Dusty and Moss for playing tricks on her.

Before she can carry out her plan, though, disaster strikes and she finds
herself working alongside the very fairies she wanted revenge on. Can
they work together and trust each other, or will things go from bad to worse?

What are flower fairies?

These unique fairies, known as plant spirits, live among flowers, plants, and
trees. They are tiny and slender and have their own special plant where they
live and sleep. Even their babies are placed inside flowers that sway in the
breeze, lulling them to sleep for their naps.

The outfits they wear are made from the leaves and flowers of their chosen
plant, so they can blend in, undetectable by humans.

Flower fairies are known to be extremely shy. They choose to be around wild
animals out in nature, far from people. To ensure they won’t be seen, they ride
on the backs of grasshops and fly among birds.

According to my research, they are five to seven inches, but in Bad Fairy, all
fairies are just a few inches tall.

The flower fairies in Bad Fairy stay in a community called Petal Patch, where
they live in flowers. They host carnivals and festivals for the equinoxes that
the fairies celebrate. In Bad Fairy, Petal Patch is devastated by a twisty (tornado).

SNEAK PEEK

Mom looks my way, and I want to crawl under the table. “Thistle, I need you
to go with me this morning. A group is going out to check on Petal Patch.
But first, Tumble and I are taking food to the school where they are handing
it out to those in need. So I figure you will have, say, half an hour to yourself?”

After what I saw of Mrs. Swirl’s and Mom’s gardens, I can only imagine
what Petal Patch looks like.

“I can go now with you,” I offer.

Mom smiles. “That would be nice.”

After helping us load our wagon with boxes, Dad leaves to go to the factory.
Then Mom and I gather seeds, fruit, and webbing. I grab a sack of tulip bulbs
so tulips will blossom in the spring. Tulips are flower fairies’ favorite flowers.
In the spring, they put their babies in the petals of the flowers and rock them
to sleep. It’s a good thing it’s not springtime now or else it would’ve been a
tragedy.

We land on the outskirts of Petal Patch and gasp at what we see. Most of
the flowers are uprooted. Ferns lay flat, dying on the ground. Lots of other
fairies—brownies, gnomes, and pixies—are helping out, clearing the area.

Happy Book Birthday, The Missing Alphabet by Elaine Kaye

Gregory the Boy: Hi everyone! My name is Gregory.

Sammy the Teddy Bear: *waves* Don't be scared, but I can talk, too. I'm Sammy.

Gregory: Sammy is my best friend in the whole wide world. We go on a lot of adventures together. Don't we, Sammy?

Sammy: Yup! Like the time when Gregory turned green at school.

Gregory: And you came to tell my friends and me about bulling.

Sammy: Someone had to.

Gregory: Then there was the time when you ripped your leg, Sammy, and Mom had to fix you up.

Sammy: *rubs leg* I don't want to talk about that.

Gregory: Let's not forget about what happened on Halloween night!

Sammy: We rode on a broom! *pretends to be an airplane*

Gregory: Now we have a brand new adventure to share with everyone.

Sammy: We do! But maybe we should let Elaine Kaye share the details about the story of The Missing Alphabet.

Elaine Kaye the Author: Thanks, boys!

NEW RELEASE FROM ELAINE KAYE:

The paper alphabet letters in Gregory Green’s classroom have gone missing, and it’s up to him and his friends to find those missing letters. They go on a hunt through the school, hoping to find them. They spot letters next to things that start with those letters, like B for Bananas in the cafeteria. But will they be able to find the entire alphabet?

The Missing Alphabet is a great story for children learning to associate letters with objects, and four activities throughout the book will further help children to get familiar with the alphabet.
