Paisley's Fashion Forest by Deborah Weed

Today's read was so girly that I had to take a peek. It seems that I'm hitting animals often this month. Yesterday's read jumped into tense, animal adventure pure, and today's read appears to head in a similar direction but with a fashion twist. I'm really curious to see if today's read is more cutesy or adventurous because it appears it could go either way. But animals and adventure aren't the only thoughts behind the tale. The author has a row of reads surrounding self-worth. I'm hoping that doesn't make this tale too message driven, though, either.

Let's just open it up and see what's inside!

A LITTLE PORCUPINE. A BIG DREAM. AND THE COURAGE TO STAY TRUE TO HERSELF.

Paisley has always known what she wants to be.

A fashion designer.

She dreams of creating spectacular designs inspired by flowers, feathers, shimmering waterfalls and all the beauty of nature.

So when Paisley sets off for the legendary Fashion Forest, she can hardly wait to show the world what she can create.

There’s just one problem...

In the Fashion Forest, porcupines aren’t the designers. Their quills are the pins.

But Paisley has ideas of her own.

With her wonderfully buzzy best friend Hatley by her side, she enters an eye-popping world where waterfalls spin silk, birds stitch with their beaks, spiders weave delicate lace and extraordinary fashions come alive.

It’s everything Paisley has ever dreamed of — until she discovers that fitting in can sometimes mean giving away more than she ever imagined.

As Paisley chases her dream, she must learn when to say YES, when to say NO, and when to stand tall and keep her quills firmly UP.

Because following your dreams should never mean giving away who you are.

Paisley’s Fashion Forest is a joyful, imaginative musical book adventure filled with friendship, humour, fabulous fashion, unforgettable characters and five original songs woven into the story.

MY TIDBITS

This porcupine is one to adore and cheer for as she finds herself not only trying to help others but fighting to save her own life...and even the life of her mother.

Paisley might be a porcupine, but she uses her quills to hold bright flowers and design various looks for herself. Her mother complains that doing this will make it hard for her to defend herself if danger nears. But then, her mother also keeps telling her about the special meaning behind each of her quills, and how she can't give certain ones away. She's aware that her mother left the Fashion Forest and something bad happened, but she has no idea what. When two owls attack and her mother is severely injured, they leave a strange stone behind. Paisley is sure they've been sent by someone and is determined to figure out what is going on. That takes her on a journey to the Fashion Forest, a place where she can let her creativity flow...and she discovers that her designs are badly needed to help animals feel like themselves again. But the main designer controls everything, and her intentions might be more sinister than anyone expected.

The main purpose of this book is to inspire readers to remain true to themselves and learn to say 'no' when needed. It does a great job at bringing these messages across and holds quite a bit of inspiration, too. There are also songs to listen to along the way. And the read is great for anyone interested in creating fashion as they will find Paisley very inspiring and wish they could design things just like her. Which they can. While there is tons of goodness, this read never comes across as overly preachy, but rather, holds a very grabbing adventure.

I was worried that the story would wander too far into the message end but was happily surprised. This is a well-woven tale with secrets, danger, adventure, friendship, evil villains, and high stakes. Paisley is a porcupine to root as are many other animals she meets along the way. While designing fashion is Paisley's love, it never swallows the adventure. Instead, the pacing remains high as Paisley faces a deadly villain, steers through dangerous situations, and faces unexpected twists and turns. The story is more than grabbing, and the unique, fashion twist adds refreshing fun.

I see animal adventure fans, who enjoy danger, intrigue, and higher-stakes, enjoying this quite a bit...especially those who also have a creative side and enjoy diving into their own styles.
