Happy Book Birthday, How to Get an Alligator Out of the Bathtub by Lynsey Martin!

It's birthday time! Today's read hits the shelves in 2 days...which counts as a birthday shout-out for me. I picked it up thanks to that smiling alligator in the pink/purple bubble bath on the cover. It screams silliness. Or at least, that's what I hope these pages will hold.

Let's open it up and hope that alligator doesn't get feisty!

But first they find out he isn't a normally alligator, while he is friendly, sophisticated, and charming. What can they do to get this alligator out of the bathtub? Turn off the hot water? Tell him they are out of alligator food? Drain the bathtub? The answer lies with finding out why Alistair, the alligator, is there in the first place.

MY TIDBITS

Humor mixes with heart-felt goodness to form an original read with a few surprises.

Two boys head into the bathroom and pull back the shower curtain to find an alligator in their bathtub. The alligator is enjoying the bubbles and getting squeaky clean, especially since he's spent most of his days in a not-so-cleanly swamp. While he doesn't seem dangerous, he refuses to leave. Now, the boys need to figure out how to get an alligator out of the bathtub...and why he's there in the first place.

This is a cute tale, which makes a lovely read-aloud and is sure to put a smile on the face, especially in the first half of the read. Getting an alligator out of the bathtub isn't an easy endeavor, and this brings automatic silliness with it. But this situation only holds for a little while as the boys need to solve the alligator's issues. This second half of the book slides into calmer humor and allows family goodness and friendship to scoot up to the forefront, instead. So, there's more than just ridiculousness in these pages.

There's a lovely balance between illustrations and text to keep the story flowing and grabbing. Each scene holds little details to add to the humor and other emotions, as well as bringing across the alligator nicely. The text offers several fun moments for those reading it out loud and flows well. It's very age appropriate and works well even for those readers, who are pretty sure of their words and picking the book up on their own. There is a change in font style and sizes, which adds personality but also gets a tiny bit small, especially at one point, making it a little difficult to read when presenting it to a group...but this is only at one spot.

It's a cute tale with humor and more, and is sure to put a smile on the face.
