Review: Cursed Rebel by H.G. Lynch

CURSED REBEL
by H.G. Lynch
YA Urban Fantasy
175 pages

COMING...
OCTOBER 5th, 2018!!!

My grandma always warned me never to trust a Faery. I never believed they were real...until I was kidnapped by one.

Finn is an obnoxious, mercurial Fae whose job it is to bring me to the King. He's gorgeous, but in this world, the prettiest things are the deadliest.

But if I want to survive the Fae realm and find a way home, I'll have to trust him...for now.

MY TIDBITS

Slightly haunting, this tale pulls into a world where beauty is dangerous and love almost impossible.

Lucy's grandmother always warned her of the fae folk—alluring, cunning and dangerous. Being an average, American kid, Lucy new they were fairy tales. When a boy with bright, red hair dashes through her school, her gut tells her something's off, but first, when he captures her and takes her to the Otherworld, does the situation hit full thrust. She's been captured by a gorgeous fae boy, one who's job it is to lure humans to his world and present them to his heartless king. Without him, she can't return home or survive the lethal world around her. With him, she might meet a fate worse than death.

This is one fans of Young Adult romance with fairies, magic, Sidhe and loads of other fantastical creatures are sure to enjoy. There is a dark undertone the entire way through, since these are not nice fairies. The world building is well done, allowing the fantastical elements to gain a wonderful vividness. It's a lovely world to dive into.

Lucy has temperament, to say the least. She lets her feelings vent, especially in the stubborn direction and is snippy even in the first chapters to those around her. While it is usually understandable, sometimes she comes across as simply immature. But she grows on the reader and, by the end, it's hard not to cheer for her and hope she makes it through.

The first chapters are a bit rough in so far that scenes flip fast, sometimes very suddenly. It took a bit to understand exactly what was going on and sink into the characters and world. I did almost put this one down but am glad I didn't. Because after the stumbling beginning, it smoothed more and more until it became an engaging story that was hard to put down. Finn and Ryan both hit a teeter-totter of love and hate, which made for delicious tension. Magic grew, danger mounted and the layers thickened. In turns into an entertaining and lovely read.

MY TIDBITS

With exotic scenes, fantastical creatures, action, and heaps of emotion, this is a read not to put down until the last page.

Asha lives with her grandfather in Miami. Her teenage life runs smoothly, however, a little unusual considering she's homeschooled, has a wealthy best friend and is well trained in several fighting forms. Just an average, teenage girl. Until her grandfather comes home one night with horrible wounds and demands that she head to India immediately to finish up her schooling/training. Not happy about it, but not in a position to argue, Asha heads in India to live with the family of her grandfather's brother, one she didn't know existed until that day. But that's only the beginning. Soon, she discovers an entire realm of fighters, who have the goal to keep the evil creatures from the lower seven realms at bay. Asha was born to be one of them, along with her friends. And so much more.

This is one of those books, which immerses the reader in a fantastical world and an epic tale. The mixture of wonderful details, action and heart-touching moments keep the pages flying by until the very end. While the book begins in Miami, the scenes quickly switch to India and then again to a fantastical realm. Each one is vivid and full of life, and the quick slide from one to the next in just a few short chapters was a bit overwhelming at first. But Asha and her friends made it switch into place as her situation and struggles soon took center stage.

The characters in this book are rich and full of personality. It's easy to get lost in Asha's relationships with all of them be it teacher, commander, friend, acquaintance, enemy or lover. And it's this drawing in of each character which makes this an engaging read, especially when the battles begin and danger lurks in the shadows.

Asha needs to discover herself as well as the layers of secrets around her. There are unexpected twists and turns, and the tension constantly mounts like a ticking time bomb. All the while, there's a building romance and a bond of friendship which is inspiring.

In other words, this is a book for friends of magic, paranormal creatures, descriptive fight scenes, and a lovely romance on the side. It's definitely a story to get lost in, and it will be interesting to see what battles Asha and her friends will face next.

Cover Reveal: The Connelly Boys with Lily Velez with Giveaway

The Connelly Boys

Celtic Witches, Book One
by Lily Velez
September 13th 2018
YA Urban Fantasy

The Connelly boys are practically royalty at St. Andrew’s Prep. Popular, wealthy, and devastatingly beautiful, the four brothers have long cast a spell over their classmates and over the sleepy seaport town of Rosalyn Bay, Ireland.
There’s only one problem: they’re also cursed.
…Or so the rumors say.
Seventeen-year-old newcomer Scarlet Monroe has never been one for rumors, but when she inadvertently banishes a demon while trying to help eldest brother Jack Connelly, the most breathtaking of the boys and the one to whom she feels inexplicably drawn, she quickly discovers there may be more to the local superstitions and folklore than she originally thought.
Before long, she’s pulled into a dark and mysterious world filled with ancient magic, powerful spells, kidnapped souls, and deadly enemies. But none of it compares to discovering the truth of who she really is…or what she’ll have to become to defeat a rising evil older than humankind itself before she loses everyone she loves—that is, of course, if she can survive the world of the Connellys long enough.
Don’t miss this first installment in the new dark fantasy series by Lily Velez, which features Irish folklore, Celtic mythology, mystery and light romance, and an engrossing world of witches and magic that will keep you reading long into the night!

And here she is...

Lily Velez has been writing stories since she was six years old. Not much has changed since then. She still prefers the written word and her overactive imagination over the ‘real world’ (though to be fair, her stories no longer feature talking dinosaurs). A graduate of Rollins College and a Florida native, when she's not reading or writing, she spends most of her days wrangling up her pit bulls Noah and Luna, planning exciting travel adventures, and nursing her addiction to cheese. All this when she isn’t participating in the extreme sport known as napping.

Review: Midnight Ice, Books 1 and 2 by Kaitlyn Davis

MIDNIGHT ICE
Books 1 and 2
by Kaitlyn Davis
YA/NA Urban Fantasy/Paranormal

Book One - FROST:
Life's tough for a vampire thief on the run--just ask Pandora Scott, she knows. Four years ago she ran away from home after everyone she loved betrayed her. But now her annoyingly grown up (and handsome) ex boyfriend is stalking her, begging her to return. A mysterious vamp with a particularly dangerous (and sexy) stare keeps popping unexpectedly into her life. The extremely powerful head vampire of New York is hunting her down because she may (or may not) have broken into his highly-secure, highly-secretive personal vault. And the fate she's been trying to outrun? Well, it's about to catch up. Because even a super-speedy vamp with the ability to disappear can't escape her own destiny.

Book Two - FREEZE:
Pandora Scott is in jail...again. Everyone she once loved betrayed her...again. And some of the most powerful people in the world want her dead...yes, again. Sound familiar? But if there's one thing Pandora is good at, it's wriggling her way out of life or death situations, and this time is no different. Armed with her ability to disappear and aided by the mysterious Sam, Pandora's got a plan. Escape the most secure prison in the world. Evade the most powerful trackers on the planet. Forget every word that Jax has ever told her. And figure out how to change one teeny tiny thing--fate. Easy, right? Well...doable, at least.

**Midnight Ice is a standalone, spin-off to Midnight Fire, a bestselling series with over 200,000 copies sold and over 5000 5-star reviews on Goodreads! Fans will enjoy special appearances from Kira, Luke and Tristan while falling in love with the new characters and new adventure of Midnight Ice.

 MY TIDBITS

I did not read the Midnight Fire series (or had even heard of it) before diving into this series. But if it's anything like this one, it will be worth a read.

Excitement, magic, betrayal and confusion make this a fast paced read which, even after the first two books, has the reader wanting more.

Pandora (aka Dory) is chronologically seen twenty but stuck in a much younger teenage body, since that's when she was turned. Now, as a vampire on the run from her past, she's turned into a thief. Thanks to her original blood and the ability to disappear—the exact ability which made her an outcast in the Titans—she's kept herself afloat in a human/supernatural world. That is, until her childhood friend and soulmate, Jak, shows up to drag her back to the Titans and to convince her to take the cure for vampirism. But he's not the only one causing her trouble. She's hunted by powerful vampires thanks to her successful heists, wanted by her father for reasons unknown to her, and haunted by a ghostly man, who claims he's her everything. Simply said, Pandora is at the center of a ton more trouble than she knew or even understands.

It took a couple of chapters for me to sink into this read. The writing is from Pandora's point of view but it kept the reader at a distance, making it hard to connect with her. First, when the other character began to interact with her and the action got going, the hook finally sank in. From there, the story grabs and doesn't let go. But I almost laid the book down before that point.

Pandora is an interesting character with many layers. On one hand, she's a hardened thief and does what she has to do, which sometimes means getting her hands dirty. On the other, she frees captives and has a hidden heart of gold. Little by little, her past comes to light, one she doesn't remember herself, and the reasons for her woven personality become clear.

There are a lot of unexpected twists in this book, some more logical than others. The author sews several different myths together to create a unique story and does this fairly seamlessly. It creates a rich background where even some of the more evil characters aren't easy to completely hate.

There is romance but it rides as unsettled as the rest of Pandora's life and doesn't cuddle in, but rather holds tension, uncertainty and distance. Which completely slides along with the other aspects Pandora faces, because this girl has a lot on her shoulders as it is.

In other words, despite the rocky beginning, this is an engaging read which is sure to thrill paranormal and urban fantasy fans.

Cover Reveal: Rival by Arwen Paris with Giveaway

RIVAL

Fate of the Stars, #2

by Arwen Paris

YA Science Fiction, Urban Fantasy

COMING. . .
NOVEMBER 1st, 2018!!!

It’s a role she didn’t want…
One deadly week has passed since seventeen year old Allison Delaney realized she must save Earth from the parasitic race of Ma’tiok. But the task is even more complicated than Allison feared, and she’s being set up to fail. Blamed for a fatal blow to the Alliance fleet that killed dozens of soldiers, Allison must face judgment for their deaths. The High Priestess Kiobaan is Allison’s only hope. Kiobaan sees the warrior spirit in Allison, along with her potential both politically and physically and agrees to train her.
And a game she can’t afford to lose.
Meanwhile, though Allison is the human host of Eenoki, protector of life, she’s not yet ready to harness their combined energy. Their bond is unpredictable at best—volatile at worst. Time is running out for Eenoki and Allison to trust each other—all or nothing—or she’ll never gain the power she needs to defeat the Ma’tiok and save Earth. When Allison is marked for death by an unknown enemy, the High Priestess Kiobaan must step-up and fight. But in return Kiobaan extracts a pledge from Allison, one that will compromise her new status and make her a target.

SNEAK PEEK

Staring out of the tinted bulletproof windows of the limo, I can’t tell for sure how gray the clouds are that gather above us. I hope it doesn’t rain again. It’s unsettling to come back here. To see the complete destruction of the California ocean side town that I once called home—Avilene Beach. It’s a ghost-like cemetery of charred, crumbling homes and palm trees turned askew and broken apart. Just like me.
This is the direct result of my decisions.
Wind skitters across the surface of black puddles racing by, reminding me of the oily blood of the Ma’tiok. It’s been just one week since my old life, my human life, ended and this new one exploded into existence. Acid rises in the back of my throat, burning hot, and I crush my jaw together hard until my lips press into a thin line. Why did Eenoki pick me?
“Priestess, do you understand what I said?”
Katok’s sharp telepathic tone startles me out of my immersive guilt. “Stick to the speech the High Priestess provided. Yes. I got it.” I swallow hard against the rising bile being pressed there by the trembling in my gut. What if this press conference makes things worse?
“Allison, don’t worry so much. You’ll be safe.” Stephen reaches out to me and Katok snatches his hand midair, crushing it in his huge taloned palm.
“Ow! Dammit, Katok!” Stephen clutches his wounded limb.
I swear, that’s almost a smirk on the massive Vongjar commander’s leopard-like face. Katok’s lips curl back menacingly to reveal his white fangs and piercing resolve. Stephen knows better than to try and touch me.
I sigh, and can’t help but glare at Stephen who sits across from me. His dark muscular arms are crossed hard against his white Navy button up shirt. Even with the blotchy purple and yellow bruises healing across his tense neck and face, he’s still handsome. But his haircut, shaved in military style, makes me miss his longer tawny surfer hair.
“Stephen, if I can’t be the bridge between the Alliance and Earth, our world won’t survive the Ma’tiok. You understand that, right?”
His angry blue eyes lock on me, softening, and he smiles.
I look away and clench my fists on the cold, empty, black leather seats beside me. We can never make it work. He’ll never understand what I am, or what I have to do. I have to serve the Alliance to have any chance of getting them to fight the Ma’tiok on the ground, instead of glassing the Earth like they have so many other infected worlds.
The blue tint to the air thickens as we get closer to our destination. What if I had just gone with Z’iram and left Earth behind? Maybe he would have spared those who died here.
No. If we left, there would be no hope of the Alliance helping this world fight back. Any other choice would have meant the total destruction of Earth without any chance of survival.
I know Eenoki is right, but the truth still hurts.
The High Priestess will arrive soon, aboard the planet killer Star Fire, to judge and test me. This speech is another test, one that I can’t afford to mess up. If Kiobaan doesn’t publicly declare me a Priestess, of Earth, then there will be no ambassador to the Alliance or protection for our world.
I take a deep breath and straighten the pale gown Tarem made me wear, irritated at how ridiculous I look. Not that I own any clothes besides what the Alliance has provided me. Before we left, my reflection shocked me. The way they pinned up my long auburn waves under a small crystalline hairpiece that stands a few inches high, reminded me of my vision of Aakina. The memory Eenoki shared with me from her last day alive, before she and her world were wiped out by the Ma’tiok.
“How much longer Katok, until there are too many Ma’tiok for your troops to handle”
His golden eyes widen. “They multiply too quick. The ground troops struggle to do more than contain them. Our current calculations project ten Earth days at most. We need Alliance support to do any more.” Katok shakes his head.
Ten days left? It’s only been twenty one since the Ma’tiok arrived!
Stephen leans closer. “He’s not telling you the whole story. Admiral Hurst says that there are over ten thousand Ma’tiok and infected humans on the ground, and that combined kills between Katok’s troops and the US military don’t even equal the rate that they’re multiplying at. We are losing every day.”

Happy Book Birthday, Dethroned by Genevieve Iseult Eldredge with Giveaway

DETHRONED
An Inimical Prequel Novella
by Genevieve Iseult Eldredge
Monster House Books
YA Urban Fantasy

For eighteen-year-old Rouen Rivoche, being a fairy princess isn’t about fancy parties and happily ever afters.
Rouen’s people are the dark Fae whose powers of lightning, thundersnow, and all things Winter make them cold, severe, and 100% intolerant of rebellion.
Too bad being a rebel is in Rouen’s blood.
Against tradition, she’s teamed up with Syl Skye, the sleeper-princess of the fair Fae—a mortal enemy who Rouen should want to kill but only wants to kiss. Plus, to be with Syl, Rouen’s masquerading as a glam goth-rock star and human high school student. Honestly, Rouen doesn’t think things could get any more complicated.
Then, she discovers she must become Queen of the Winter Court or all her people will die. No pressure.
Now, dark forces are amassing in the Winter Court, turning Rouen’s people against her and blocking her path to the throne. Even Syl with all her powers of white flame and Summer can’t stop this new kind of evil.
Because betrayal cuts close when it’s someone you love… and now it looks like Rouen’s going to be dethroned before she ever becomes queen.

SNEAK PEEK

Chapter One
Rouen

There’s nowhere I belong
No home, no hearth
No sing, no song
A princess with no kingdom to rule
– “Nowhere I Belong” – Euphoria
It’s December 24, Christmas Eve in the mortal realm, and you know what that means.
Only fifty-four days to go. Fifty-four days until the Lunar New Year.
Until I take my rightful place as Queen of the dark Fae.
No more being Rouen, princess-assassin and rebel. Once Father steps down—and he said he would—I’ll take his place.
Half of me, my dark self, says he’s lying through his fangs again. But the other half of me remembers the father-before, the man he was before our realm was crippled by our mortal enemies, the fair Fae. That man taught me to fight, to tap into the Winter in my royal blood and hear the wintry nightsong running through our Dark Faerie realm like a secret language.
The Adamant King. He was a good father and a great king—powerful but even-tempered, severe but just.
That’s the man I could trust. That man would keep his word to make me queen.
Even though there’s never been a dark Fae queen. Ever.
I’ll be the first. I can’t wait to rule, to do whatever I want, to be with whoever I want.
In fifty-four days.
But who’s counting?
“Not you,” Syl murmurs sleepily as we lie on the beat-up couch in the dressing room of our local club/hangout, the Nanci Raygun. It’s a snug room wallpapered with faded band flyers and covered in peeling spray paint art. The best thing is the comfy couch that’s ideal for snuggling with your girlfriend.
“Nope. Not me.” I kiss the top of Syl’s red curls. She knows me too well.
Just like I’m the princess of the dark Fae, Syl’s the princess of the fair Fae.
We’re complete opposites. I’m everything Winter—storms and squalls and brutal cold, unyielding ice and thundersnow. My Syl is the epitome of Summer and sun and brightness, with the power to purify dark magic with her white flame.
We met when I tried to kill her.
Technically, we’re mortal enemies. Winter. Summer. You get the picture.
Long story short, I tried to assassinate her. Not my finest moment, but I was controlled by Circuit Fae black-magic—a Moribund infection that stole my will and forced me to hunt her down when she was a mere mortal. Sleeper-princess that she is, though, she Awakened to the fair Fae power inside her.
Hoo-boy, did she give me a hard time. I loved it. Still do.
Syl snuggles in closer. Her nearness sends a spike of warmth shooting through me. She leans her head on my shoulder. “Is it time for your gig yet?”
Ancestors, I hope not. I’d rather lie on this couch with her forever. Lazily, I look past the Euphoria fliers plastered all over the dressing room and check the faded Blue Bee Cider clock on the wall. Almost 11 p.m. “Ten minutes.”
Ten minutes till I step onstage and take on the Euphoria half of my mortal guise. The other half is a seventeen-year-old high school junior, but this is more my style—local legend and goth rockstar violinist. Thanks to my powerful Glamoury, only Syl, her mom, and a few kids at Richmond Elite High have put the Rouen-Euphoria connection together. Otherwise, the human paparazzi would have a heyday with us.
As it is, they mostly leave us alone. Good thing, too, since tonight, I want some peace.
Tonight’s special.
In a little bit, Syl will be headed off on her own. Her task is less glamorous, but far more important. She has to leave to grab our Christmas Eve dinner.
I’ve never had a proper Christmas Eve dinner. It’s a mortal thing and very different from my people’s Dark Yule celebrations (which involve a lot of mayhem and destruction), and I’m looking forward to it.
Syl turns her face into my shoulder and says something like, mumble, mumble, don’t wanna, mumble, mumble, cold outside, mumble.
So. Adorable. I kiss the top of her head, inhaling the heady scent of sunshine and vanilla. My sweet fair Fae princess.
I’d do anything to protect her.

And here she is...
Raised by witches and dragons in the northern wilds, GIE writes angsty urban fantasy YA romance--where girls who are mortal enemies kick butt, take names, and fall in love against all odds.

While they are there, they agree to meet again at various locations along the Mississippi River to remember him as they trace his journey to the Gulf of Mexico. These gatherings set the foundation for the Legacy in Legend series. Every time the family assembles, Jeni comes in contact with a malicious otherworldly element. These frightening and perilous encounters are no help in Jeni’s search for her spiritual heritage, as the supernatural entities come from a variety of mythologies and lore. Yet each vengeful confrontation makes it more important that she discover and harness whatever power she possesses so she can protect herself and her loved ones and, ultimately, end the deadly attacks.
The Legacy in Legend Series brings together mythology and suspense along with a little bit of romance when Jeni meets Shattered Ice, an apprentice medicine man. The prequel, Heart of Ice, is about Ice before he meets Jeni. Thunderstone and Veiled Existence are told from both Jeni’s and Ice’s point of view.

MY TIDBITS

Taking a spin into Indian myths and even a touch of Irish lore, this is a thrilling adventure which holds tension and chills until the last page.

While the prequel concentrates on Ice, a seventeen-year-old apprentice of the tribe's medicine man, and his edge-of-the-seat meeting with a mystical cannibal, the next two books move into a duo-telling. Upon meeting Jeni, an average girl on a family gathering to spread her grandfather's ashes into the Mississippi River, the action jumps up a notch as the two face dangerous creatures, and especially Jeni's unknown heritage, which has left her with her own mystical powers.

The prequel starts with a solid introduction to Ice and his situation. He's a nice guy, who takes his apprenticeship seriously, but then, with a master like Rik teaching him, he's in a good place. He has a lot to learn, but he has a very good head on his shoulders and a wonderful moral compass. While the writing held me at arm's length for several chapters, as the story started to unfold, I found myself more and more engaged until I couldn't put the book down. Being a box set, it also meant that I could slide right into the next book without any trouble.

The two main books are simply addictive. The Indian twist was refreshing as well as intriguing, and the author did a fantastic job at setting all of it in a modern day world. This walks the line of thriller and never leaves a boring moment. While some clues are easy to figure out, other events come as a sheer surprise. The added romance hit the right spots and formed a necessary bond between Jeni and Ice.

Fans of paranormal, thrillers and suspense with lesser known myths and supernatural creatures will enjoy this read.
