Tiffany Shand is a writing mentor, professionally trained copy editor and copy writer who has been writing stories for as long as she can remember. Born in East Anglia, Tiffany still lives in the area, constantly guarding her work space from the two cats which she shares her home with.

She began using her pets as a writing inspiration when she was a child, before moving on to write her first novel after successful completion of a creative writing course. Nowadays, Tiffany writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance, as well as nonfiction books for other writers, all available through Amazon and on her own website.

Mom and Dad's Day with a Review: Esteemed Vampire Cat by Tyrolin Puxty

Today, it's Mom and Dad's day here on Bookworm for Kids, which means that I've pulled out a book, which is not really intended for the younger readers, but for the parents instead. Yep, even parents need their reads. This one, however, is appropriate for the YA audience. (there are some bloody-ish scenes but portrayed in a light way and definitely nothing more than many YA books hold).

Still, working with a nervous werewolf and a monster addicted to tickling wasn't on his to-do list.

MY TIDBITS

Over the top characters, a ridiculous plot and, at the center of it all, an arrogant cat with tons of wit and brains—a fantastically, hilarious read!

Colt Harper is one of a kind, mostly because his kind is nearly extinct. As the last surviving vampire cat, it's Colt's inborn duty to kill all humans which have ever offended, hurt or hated a cat. Unfortunately, killing humans is no longer allowed—a habit Colt really can't break—placing him in community service. Again. That this community service turns out to involve a whole lot more, and he's soon running to save his and his new found friends' (in the broadest sense of the term) lives.

Tyrolin Puxty has a treasure chest of an imagination and lets it flow freely. The characters are all gems, each harboring very distinct attitudes and quirks, and each as funny as can be. Colt Harper is as complex as a ancient cat should be, and doesn't even understand himself at times. But he's clever, he's witty, and he manages to force himself to handle anything thrown his way—even disgusting humans. His attempt to maintain a high level of esteem always runs up against road blocks, and it's a sheer delight to watch out he manages to slink his way around through them and even come out on top. Usually.

The monsters go past the well-versed range and hit upon less known ones, which kill people through tickling or force them into nightmare states. There's even the chance that a monster be turned into a pair of red running legs—something to be avoided at all costs. It's not a calm tale, but bloody and filled with death. There's action, skin-of-the-teeth escapes and exciting fight scenes. Don't forget the mystery and plenty of very unexpected twists and turns, and it all gets thrown together with a huge amount of spicy wit and fun. In other words, it's not the usual paranormal read and takes serious with an edge of quirky oddness. And that's exactly what makes it such an amazing read.

Summed up, this is for all those paranormal (especially vampire cat) fans who are ready to plunge into something completely different and new.

He struggles to suppress and control his strange new abilities, worried about exposing his secret and being kicked off the football team, until he befriends Dex, a diminutive classmate who can somehow jump as high as ten feet in the air. Alex quickly realizes that he isn’t the only one at school with a secret. As the school year unfolds, Alex learns more about his abilities while he also deals with bullies, holds hands with his first crush, and discovers the shocking truth about himself and his parents.

MY TIDBITS

Alexander is starting a new school and seventh grade, and right from the first day, things don't run as he expects. A lot is going on the first chapters of this book: Alexander experiencing mob bullying, strange 'powers' appearing, meeting girls, inventor Dad with strange inventions and being sucked onto a football team. I felt a bit muddled at first, as if trying to search for the main string among an avalanche, but once the story got rolling, things started clicking into place.

Alex is an interesting kid who simply tries to get through situations as best (and as painless) as possible. He doesn't do anything to start his sticky situation, but is rather thrown into the mystery unexpectedly. He's level headed, has a good heart, and sees things as a seventh grader should. I believe kids will have no trouble relating to him...and especially boys will love the football twist.

There are several messages in this book--bullying and friendship standing center stage. It was fun to watch the friendships develop and hold through even difficult situations. I enjoyed the way Alex and his friends dealt with things, and saw a lot of truth in the way the older students or even coaches sometimes reacted. There are many things seventh graders will recognize and sympathize with. And it is no trouble to route for Alex the entire time.

The story itself moves along nicely. One has to be a little open-minded when going into it, but kids will have no trouble accepting things with their fantasy. I mean, what young football fan doesn't want a perfect robot coach of their very own or to discover they can do amazing things?

Summed up, this is an enjoyable read and I think kids (especially boys) ages 8+ will enjoy Alex and his strange adventure.
