Happy Book Birthday, Little Love Songs by Sandra Boynton!

When I saw this, the snuggly atmosphere on the cover caught my attention...so much so that I didn't even realize that this book is musical! Every page carries a song, and that already puts a smile on my face. I'm hoping that they are enjoyable and that these pages are as wholesomely amazing as they appear.

These pages invite to snuggles again and again and again.

This is a board book for the youngest readers/listeners out there. The cover already radiates an atmosphere of love and makes it clear what this book is all about. Every two-page spread holds a short and cute poem, each one connecting with love. These range from simple snuggles to liking noses and more. While the poems are cute, entertaining and flow well as a read-aloud for this young audience level, it's the music which makes everything really shine. The last poem rounds off in a greeting to bedtime and sets the mood for dreams.

The book is sturdy and will take a little wear and tear. Especially the buttons (found with each poem) are created with young listeners in mind and are flat and easy to activate. The mechanics of the book are safely enclosed inside a plastic container, which is worked into the back cover. A switch on the back of the book turns the book on or off.

The songs are loud enough to be heard and understood without crossing into overly loud. Each one carries a slight different music direction, which adds a nice variety. While the poems and music are a little too complex to work as quick sing-alongs, they are very enjoyable to listen to and make the poems that much more interesting.

The illustrations are fairly simple and give just enough details to make the scenes clear. The characters are adorable and fit the age group nicely, too.

It's a warming read, which gives an atmosphere of care and love...and it's well done.

MY TIDBITS

Rocking on the waves with this friendly group of animals invites to calming dreams.

It's bedtime on the ship, which is sailing at sea, and the animal crew needs to get ready. They run below deck, get dressed, brush teeth, and, at one point, settle into bed.

This is an original twist on good night stories, which does call for calm and sweet dreams. The idea of having animals at sea...without saying much but just placing them on a boat...is fun. The animals range from elephants to rabbits, a large bunch. They do everything together, which makes for a bit of chaos but so much familiar warmth. There are a lot of good feelings in these pages, which give security and the sense of belonging.

The words are very simple, allowing the illustrations to carry much of the tale. These portray the animals in a way, which is great for young listeners and makes it hard not to want to be friends with these animals, too. There's a lullaby toward the end of the book with the notes, which can then be sung right along as the rabbits do their singing.

All the elements needed to soothe young bedtime goers into sleep seem to be in these pages...and it left me also wondering what other adventures this group might have someday.

Review: How Big Is Zagnodd by Sandra Boynton

Ready for a little fun while learning? Today's book is a board book for those youngest readers, and this one is for all those alien fans out there. It takes a spacey, silly twist into the task of learning comparison words such as big, bright and so on. Ready to take a peek?

HOW BIG IS ZAGNODD?

by Sandra Boynton
Little Simon
Board Book
16 pages
ages 1 to 5

Finally, a board book that dares to answer the question: “HOW BIG IS ZAGNODD?” (Spoiler alert: SO big.) From there, we zip around outer space to meet a wild variety of aliens—Boknuk, Fleeb, Igwak, to name a few—who are LONG or FUZZY or BRIGHT or DANCEY or SLEEPY. And then, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear, there’s Steve.

This hilarious new book from the out-of-this-world Sandra Boynton will have Earthlings big and small giggling with delight.

MY TIDBITS

With tons of imagination and more than a pinch of zany fun, this board book tackles the worlds of comparison words and gives a whole new twist to learning.

Big. Bright. Long. The meaning behind description words is the focus of these pages and targets those very beginning word friends (or soon to be). But boring is thrown way to the side in these pages as the craziest, most imaginative aliens show their stuff.

The illustrations are bright and bold, but these aliens deserve nothing else. The terms are very simple, and the illustrations demonstrate exactly what is meant by each word. While not every listener will be able to connect with the fun creatures, many will probably giggle and, at least, wonder about the silly beings. If nothing else, the originality does stick out and will help young listeners remember the terms and the illustrations that went with them. So, in other words, I have no idea that this book fulfills its purpose splendidly.

Review: Silly Lullaby by Sandra Boynton

SILLY LULLABY
by Sandra Boynton
Little Simon Books
Board Book
16 pages
ages 0 to 5

What’s the best way to say good night? With a silly lullaby from the beloved and bestselling Sandra Boynton.

It all starts with the big bear observing to the little bear in the red footie pajamas:

Your pajamas are on.
There’s a duck on your head.
I think that this means
you are ready for bed.

Curl up with your favorite little person and this charmingly unpredictable go-to-sleep book. Whether you are a parent, child, or just another snoozing chicken in the bathtub, Silly Lullaby is truly a sweet dream surprise. The sneakers in the freezer heartily concur.

MY TIDBITS

Silliness hits high in this sweet little lullaby which makes absolutely little sense and will have those tired eyes happily ready for bed time.

This is a short, cute and absolutely ridiculous book. The first line might sound normal, but already with the second, nonsense starts and will have kids saying 'huh?' before diving into a world of giggles, snorts and nonsense. When the lullaby really gets underway, it starts with an accompanying tune, written out for those who might be ready to sing this thing. And it is worth singing..again...and again...and again...and again...

The illustrations are bright and allow the silliness to be shown without adding to it...too much. These too will have kids flipping through again and again as they  soon sing the song on their own.

My kids found this book hilarious (although I did lift my eyebrows at first) and insist it's a definite 5-star read.
