 Okie dokie. I posted this one yesterday but was unable to read it and get up the review I'd planned to do. So, I'm making up for that now.

MY TIDBITS

I've read several works from this author and always look forward to see what's coming next. This time, her tale took an exciting, new direction.

Idrisa is an orphan and as normal as can be, or at least, so she thinks, since only royals and elites possess magic. But when she attends the kingdom-wide birthday gala of the prince, strange things begin to happen. Not only does she feel awful, but there's something pulling her toward the lake. Giving in, she follows the call and ends up with a powerful, mythical sword only she can wield. Her secret doesn't stay as such for long, and soon the king is doing what he can to gain possession of the sword himself.

This is the first book in a brand, new series (as it appears) and a great start. While the writing came across as a bit too flowery to me, at first, I soon found myself being pulled in by the characters. It's an exciting ride with tons of subplots, twists, intrigue, magic and more. While this is a type of King Arthur re-telling, it has a life of its own right along with an original world, characters and plot. I expected something more fitting for the original tale's setting, and I'm so glad the author followed her very own direction.

I can't wait to see where everything goes from here because it promises to be quite the ride.

SNEAK PEEK

The voice in my head hummed a tune with ancient words. The somber melody rose an octave higher and dipped lower. A song of death, a song of horror and grief, and yet beautiful and profound, like the voice, raw and pure.

“I’m here. What do you want?” Why was I talking to the water?

I wrapped my arms around my chest when the breeze blew harder, water slamming against the walkway. Perhaps a warning of something terrible to come.

“Idrisa.” It sang my name, a soft tune filling my mind with bliss.

“Why is my lantern black? Why have you put it in front of me?” I shouted, desperate for answers.

Something glowed inside the lake, the size of an orb at first, then illuminated brighter and closer, like the birth of a new star. I threw my arms up to protect myself but the glow shifted, and then split into an image of three women.

Their long, silver hair and flowing white dresses blazed like milky fire, and brilliant light shone where their faces should be. I couldn’t stare without blinding myself.

“We welcome you, Idrisa. Do not be afraid. We are the Eternal Mothers,” they said in unison. Their voices sounded in my head like a hypnotic and celestial chorus.

My heart lurched to my throat. I curtsied, awed and humbled they’d appear before someone like me. Surely there was a mistake.

“What do you want with me?” I asked, my voice shaky.

“You are the light and the dark of this world. Within you lies strength, courage, and hope. Your time has come.” The Lady in the middle held a beaming sword that hadn’t been there before.

The sword rose from the lake, no doubt a hallucination. I shivered, an icy blast of wind nearly knocking me back as mist sprayed over my face. I didn’t know how deep the lake reached. If I fell, I doubted I could swim in the freezing water.

“I am Eternal Mother Viviane, the voice of all. I present to you, Caliburn.” The white light from the blade, like a thousand diamonds blessed with inner fire, beckoned me to reach out for it.

Your time has come? “What do you mean? Is it my time to die?”

“The truest of hearts and the blood of the firstborn, to restore the balance from once torn. Kingdoms shall rise and fall and empires alike, but only the blessed ones can save them all. You must live, Idrisa. You must fight. Most of all, you must have faith and accept your destiny. Now, take Caliburn and run.”

Before I could ask more questions, rapid footsteps vibrated on the walkway.

MY TIDBITS

Note: I did read the second book in the series before diving into this one, Since each book in the series starts where the last one left off, the series should be read as such and not each book as a stand-alone.

Back with the rebels, Ava now is facing all sorts of new troubles. One of her friends, who escaped ISAN with her, is dying, and they need to find the antidote (a difficult mix only the ISAN has) before her time runs out. Ava's blood test has also revealed who her twin is, and it's not who she was suspecting it to be...it's much worse. Add an ever growing ISAN threat, who is secretly plotting something huge, and the possibility of a traitor within the rebels' walls, and Ava can't pause to take a breath yet.

The weave of plots and subplots has grown thicker during this series and doesn't let up in this book. Ava has a lot to deal with, not only her own problems of adjusting back into the rebel group and adapting to the darkness her past might hold, but she has to save a life, figure out a new sibling relationships, deal with a past evil, and thwart the plans of ISAN, who wants nothing more than to capture and bring her back. Add the romance and some new friendships, and there isn't exactly a lot of time for the book to slow down. And...as extra kudos to the author...this all runs along smoothly!

Action and tension remain steady throughout the read, but sometimes, I wondered if there was almost  too much going on. For example, a major bombshell is dropped in the first chapter but then hardly mentioned again until long past the first half of the book. As Ava faced ISAN and her past in an exciting scene, I couldn't help but pause and wonder what happened to that monumental moment in that first chapter. But then, I have to give poor Ava a break. She's up against so much. How could the girl deal with so many issues at once? But this speed also caused some hiccups with some of the new characters. While each one adds spice to the tale, some barely get enough page time for the reader to really connect with them. Plus, there are still tons of characters from the first two books, and even these aren't getting the depth they deserve...but again, it's a thick pool! And let's be honest, outside of Ava, this book isn't really about character depth. It's about action. Every turn adds new secrets and around every corner, there's another surprise. In other words, it's an exciting read and definitely kept me in the pages until the very end.

MY TIDBITS

Reminding a bit of Nakita, action and intrigue hit high-speed to great an exciting read.

After Ava's mother died, she entered the world of foster care but soon ran away and landed on the streets. ISAN found her there, and discovering that she had a rare yet valuable gene mutation, pulled her into their secret society and trained her to be an assassin. Here, she knows she can fulfill her mother's wishes and change the world for the better. But when a strange text pops up on her screen with a person claiming to be from her past, her world is about to be swung around on its head.

I'm a fan of several of this author's books, and ISAN ranks as one of my favorites from her. It starts with a bang and jumps right into the action. This beginning did leave some questions...I like a little more background to get a better grip on the characters...but by the third chapter, the story pulled in and kept me reading until the last page. There are no lulls as the action rolls and secrets unfold. Ava's got her hands full at ISAN with a group of colleagues, who hold as many secrets and sharp edges as those who control her strings. Everybody wears a mask, and everyone has one goal—survive and succeed.

While the writing did feel a bit loose at times, the plot and Ava's character caught me up and created an enjoyable read. It was hard to guess what would happen next...or who to trust. Even when it came to the more romantic direction, which offered all sorts of sharp stumbles along the way. Friendship is even harsher, but that's exactly what this world of intrigue needs. I'm looking forward to seeing where all of this goes next.

MY TIDBITS

This is one of those reads, which hits in high gear and doesn't let go until the last page...and not even then.

I did read the first book in this series and highly recommend reading it as a series, since each book starts where the last left off.

While book one set the stage, this book takes intrigue and danger head on. There's so many secrets, and with every answer which comes, even more questions come to light. Every scene and moment  left me wondering what was about to happen next. In other words, it's a very hard book to put down. There also more to discover about the characters, keeping the needed depth to make the characters interesting and easy to fever for. And there is a lot to fever for. Tension sits around every bend.

The world is vivid, well described and holds enough sense to make it come to life. There's enough logic to guarantee that no stumbles occur, and the story flows all the way through. Add in a bit of romance, and it's a great mix. The ending does hit with a huge cliff-hanger (something I'm always a bit torn over), but it does promise a great adventure in the next book, too.

MY TIDBITS

I was excited to get my hands on this one, and even more excited that it didn't disappoint. Before reading this first book, it's highly recommendable to read The Angel Knights first. Although the author does give enough background to get the story going, it's easier to understand the characters and the situation after reading the novella.

Lucia and Zach are sent on a mission with their uncle to scope out supernaturals. As angels, they're hoping to find a way to stop the threat of a possible war with the demons. Hiding as students at a high school on Hawaii, they soon locate students with special powers. But the numbers are much greater than they first expect as are the secrets some of the hold. Soon, Lucia finds herself not only trying to figure out normal human, high school teenagers but battling a very evil force. Add a forbidden romance, and she's gotten herself into a prickly situation.

This is an exciting read involving the battle between good and evil, while letting tons of gray swim in between. During the first chapters, it's a little hard to grasp Lucia and Zach, but then, they're having trouble grasping their new situation. As fresh inhabitants on Earth (undercover), they are trying to blend in with humans and not necessarily understanding things right away. As the story progresses, especially Lucia becomes an amazing character, who is hard not to like. She's brave, protective, a little awkward and naive, but determined to fulfill her role as a warrior for good. And she's not alone. The characters around her each have their own personalities, problems and goals, which gives the tale a nice depth. They offer tons of twists and turns as the plot progresses and make it hard to guess where the entire adventure is heading.

Boring is not a word for this book. Something is always happening, and the danger increases with every page. More and more characters unfold as the plot thickens, promising a rich series to come. Still, the story maintains the feel of a teenage novel. The characters make many mistakes and behave as teens would—this is a definite YA read. There's mistrust as well as concerns about popularity and who gets to sit at which table in the cafeteria. The romance fits well to the age group as well. It has a bit of instant love, but also isn't an easy and builds up over time.

Fans of young adult paranormal fantasy and romance with tons of magic, demons and battles are sure to enjoy this one. The ending is a cliff-hanger and promises tons more to come.

Eli willed his sword away. It disappeared behind his back, just the way I would have done it. “You know nothing. Nothing about me is human. I won’t be a part of something that could kill any one of you.”
“How could it kill us if—?” Then I had a thought, recalling the first time I’d seen him in the cafeteria. I had no evidence but it was worth the shot. “You can astral travel, can’t you? You’ve done it before, when you first saw me in the cafeteria. You can travel in the present too. That’s why you took off.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Do you even know what that is?” His jaw clenched.
I knew he was lying. “Out-of-body experience.” I followed behind him when he started walking away.
“You have no idea of the consequences when you travel. Astral travel.”
“Then let it be my consequence.”
Eli whipped around. His face was just a breath away from mine. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Then show me.”
Eli pierced his eyes into mine. His heart drummed a mile a minute. “You want to feel pain, Lucia? You want to know what happens to people when they astral travel?”
“I-I—” I didn’t know what to say. I certainly didn’t expect him to say the things he did.
Eli extended his arm to me. “Take my hand.”
“No.”

“Last warning.”
“Last warning for—ELI.” I screamed. My stomach dropped, along with my body. Eli’s arms embraced me as we plunged through multiple layers of clouds with my back facing down. Hair whipped my face and the force of gravity made me dizzy.
“You didn’t heed my warning, Lucia,” Eli grumbled.
“So you’re trying to kill me?” The normal reaction for someone in this situation would be to fight back, but my instincts told me I wasn’t in danger. “What are you doing?” The clouds got smaller as we plummeted faster by the second. I began to have second thoughts. Wanting to believe so badly I could get through to him, I’d let it possibly cost my life.
He ignored my plea. Looking squarely in my eyes as air rushed against us, he said nonchalantly, “Get ready to die.”
