Today's read... CoComelon: I Like School! adapted by Maggie Testa

I have a nephew, who is a huge fan of CoComelon. So, today's read is for him. It's an early reader, which should help young readers begin their first, very basic stories. I'm expecting several familiar scenes from one of the shows in the series as well as a little reading help. Let's see how this book does.

CoComelon fans will enjoy exploring words and sentences with this read, but even those who aren't into the show will have no problem joining in.

This starts out with a few exercises to help ease into the read. There are some sounds to practice (-ay, -ool, and -ook) as well as twelve basic 'sight' words and nine more difficult ones. This does a good job at preparing young readers for the tale and gives them some practice before facing the words in sentence form. 

The story follows JJ as he spends a day at school and tells what the class does throughout the day. The sentences are kept short, most three to four words long. They incorporate the words practiced at the beginning of the book and tend to repeat the same phrases with slight alterations. It's a gentle way to ease into reading. 

The illustrations are scenes taken from Cocomelon and will be recognizable to fans. But even those who don't know the show will enjoy the lively and familiar situations. The scenes also offer other activities such as color recognition, counting, and shapes. All of these are bright and bold, making them easy to see and use.

At the end of the book, there are several questions to help readers reconsider not only what they read but also connect the story with their own experiences. This last part will need assistance from the teacher, guardian, parent or adult but then, the book is laid out with the purpose to use in a guided reading situation. After the first run through, readers will enjoy revisiting the story. It's fun to read and is well laid out as well.

Fans of  Cocomelon can join their favorite characters as they get ready to discover an Easter surprise.

JJ is very excited about Easter. At school, his class creates bunny masks to prepare for the celebration. JJ takes care to do a good job and creates a cute mask. But there's still a big surprise waiting for him.

This is a board book, created for small hands and made to take a little wear and tear. To fit the Easter theme, it has a lovely egg shape, which also keeps corners away. The length is nice and short, as board books tend to be, and each page is bright and colorful. It focuses on the fun surrounding the preparations for a big event and demonstrates how putting in effort and care increases the joy.

The tale comes from the very popular series, Cocomelon, and portrays the scenes from one of their shows. While there's a short sentence or two on each two-page spread to help listeners follow the story...and this in a personal and cute way...the text to the song from the show flows along the bottom. The illustrations are taken directly from the video scenes, which will delight young fans as they will immediately recognize the characters. These are well placed and let the story shine. I was surprised that the story is more about creating a bunny mask than the end surprise as the title suggests, but this will definitely have listeners ready to dive into their own craft project (so be ready for that!)

The text is a little on the heavier side but easy to understand. So, I do see that part more for the upper age end of the intended audience level. But since this follows something readers will already recognize, little ones will enjoy that aspect. It's a cute book with tons of positivity and is definitely more geared to readers, who know the show. But those readers will enjoy this quite a bit, too.

 Normally, I don't have a review on the same day as my 'What's Coming' posts, but September is going to be overly packed with all sorts of good reads. To make sure I don't miss any of them, I'm going to be scrunching and shoving and wiggling as many as I can. 

Today's review comes from a popular Youtube show and just happens to be based on a very familiar, child song.

Fans of CoComelon will recognize this one right away, but even those who don't know the show will have no trouble getting involved, since it follows a very popular children's song.

Shaped like a bus, this board book caught my eye right away. It's a little more robust and will take some abuse from younger listeners. The song, The Wheels on the Bus, is one that many kids already know and this book allows them to sing each verse, while watching what happens with JJ on the bus. Of course, he has some adventures on the side, too, and this adds another level to the entire tale.

The illustrations are bright and cheerful. JJ's excitement is palpable on every page and makes it hard not to smile. The speech bubbles are in their own, colored boxes, while the verse for the son is written more into the illustrations with a musical style. 

It's a fun book and a nice way to get kids involved as the read and sing.

Today's review is for those younger readers out there! Parents of this beginning book bunch might recognize Cocomelon, thanks to it's popularity on YouTube and Netflix. There are several books hitting the world soon, which have been inspired by this series. There were times, I found it helpful to get my youngest to gain more interest in reading by picking up characters they already knew from cartoons and such.  And I've always been a fan of novelty books, which carry something a little special.

So, off we go!

With simple fun, this book does awake curiosity for eating those veggies.

This is a robust, little board book, which is great to take on a bit of abuse and fit right into younger readers' hands. The spoon on the side is a nice touch and caught my interest (yes, I'm easily intrigued). 

The illustrations follow exactly the type of scenes as seen in the CoComelon show. So, fans will have no trouble recognizing and finding familiarity with the characters and situations. These are bright and very busy illustrations, not only due to the pictures shown, but also, the words dance everywhere. I find it a bit too busy, but others might disagree.

The main text is easy to find and read, since this is placed in green text boxes. The vocabulary is great for the younger listeners. It makes for an easy read-aloud, too...which is what this book really works well as. In addition to the main text, which accompanies the mother's and child's dialogue as they eat vegetables, there are the words for the fitting song (which I'm assuming comes from the show), so this can also be sung along. This does make it easy to really get engaged in the read, when a parent/guardian/caretaker read this for the child, since it adds more interaction and variety. 

I can see this one working to encourage kids to eat their vegetables, especially when they have the exact same thing on their plate as the character in these pages. And if nothing else, it is a lot of fun to read.
