Like tonight, for instance.
I stroll through New York’s Central Park. Ahead of me, there strides a guy in a chicken costume. I’m talking yellow feathers, plumed tail, the whole smash. A sash extends from his shoulder to his hip that reads Eat At Cluck Town. This fellow is anything but normal, and not for the obvious wardrobe reasons.
He’s actually a vampire.
Even worse, he’s an audax, which is a shape-shifting vampire Nazi. All audax started off as German soldiers in World War II. During a raid, they entered the magical city of El Dorado, got changed into vampires, and have been causing trouble ever since.
All of which is why I can’t wait to punch this particular blood sucker.
With a stake.
Right through his heart.
Because I’m more than just a teenager who’s dressed up for a night of dancing. I’m a dragon-shifter princess with a secret obsession.
Slaying audax.
I know. My life is strange. It runs in the family.
Squinting, I focus on the guy’s birdy outfit. Dragon shifters like me are immune to supernatural glamours, so I can easily detect the decaying body that’s magically hidden under all those feathers.
Hello, vampire.
The real costume-wearing human got attacked by an audax. After drinking the victim’s blood, this particular vampire magically took on the man’s appearance, bird outfit and all.
And the original chicken guy? Way dead.
Cold sorrow moves through me. Most likely, I’m the first to know about this lost life. I’m certainly the only one around here who detects the audax.
Ah, to be a clueless human. They’ve no idea how many evils surround them.
For his part, Vampire Chicken Guy (VCG for short) keeps sauntering along the stone path, his plumed tail bobbing with each step. He pulls off his fake chicken head to reveal someone my age—that would be seventeen—with round cheeks, short red hair and tons of freckles. A stolen face.
My grief melts into lava-hot rage. How dare this audax kill a human? I twist the clunky golden bracelet around my right wrist. If I take this off and flip the segments about, it transforms into a small spike. That’s the only way to fully kill an audax…
A golden stake through the heart.
Meanwhile VCG smiles innocently at passersby. New Yorkers actually grin and wave in return, which is rare. Must be a chicken thing. I hoist up my bandeau top and keep following. The dance club can wait.
VCG is going down.

MY TIDBITS

Packed to the gills, this is a read which grabs and races forward, leaving the reader on the edge of their seat until the very end.

Meimi now attends ECHO Academy, where the Headmaster plans to use her and her friends for his evil plot. That's not what bothers Meimi. Her boyfriend, Thorne, has been forced to the Exile Void, a place where she supposedly can't reach him. Not that something like that can stop Meimi, especially with her two friends backing her up. Meanwhile, Thorne is busy with his father, who wants to take Meimi as his own wife to secure his hold on the throne. And that's just the beginning.

While this is the second book in the series, it slips in after the others have already been released. It fills in several questions, which still were left unanswered and definitely adds to the characters and plot. Especially the plot. There is so much going on in this book, that there isn't a chance to get bored. Each plot has more underlying plots, creating an extremely complicated, woven web. Secrets abound, and the answers hold even more surprises than first appears. Simple is simply not the word for this book. And this makes an exciting read, which rounds off the series in the most unexpected ways.

I would not recommend reading this book as a stand-alone, since it does smooth out the plot holes and jumps from the rest of the books. But then, this is an exciting series all around, and not one that should be missed.

An hour later, I stand in an ornate ballroom at the Ryder mansion.
In a tux.
And my world has stopped spinning. Or perhaps it’s simply whirling too fast. At this point, it’s hard to know.
Myla Lewis is here.
Father steps up beside me. “How was the chat with Silvinio, my son?”
“Not too productive. He volunteered that he’s no longer gambling.” I leave out the tidbits about the Tithe and Aldred, since Father thinks those two can do no wrong.
“Is he gambling the demon fighting circuit again?” asks Father.
“Most likely.”
Father then launches into a recap on the latest winners and losers on the circuit. At least, I think that’s what he’s talking about. It’s hard to pay attention.
Myla is crossing the room.
And she’s heading in my direction.
At some point, Father stops talking. Myla pauses a few yards away. Her back is toward me, but even so, I’m a hunter. There’s no missing the slightest twitch in her ears. No one else stands near Myla. Only me and my father.
Myla must be listening to us.
My thoughts race. What did Walker say before? Myla might find me intriguing, and Walker didn’t want Myla to turn heartsick. And now, she seems to be paying attention. This is bad. True, I could be imagining her interest. But even if it’s one chance on a thousand that I could hurt her, I simply can’t risk it. Having Myla in my life will cause her nothing but pain, one way or another.
That leaves only one thing to do. Follow Walker’s instructions. His words echo through my mind.
If you ever encounter Miss Lewis, you should play the haughty thrax. Look down on her demonic side. She’ll hate it—and you—forever.
As Father walks off, I keep my gaze locked in Myla’s outline. She still seems alert, but isn’t fidgeting or clenching her fists. A wave of relief moves through me. Maybe I was imagining the connection between us. Every hunter makes mistakes.
Clang. Myla knocks over a can onto the floor.
Now I could leave, but my feet move toward Myla on their own. “Are you alright, Miss?”
She turns to face me and I could cheer for joy. Up close, she’s lovelier than I imagined. Life and light glitters in her brown eyes. My arms ache to envelop her. She smells of cinnamon and sunshine.
“I’m fine,” she says simply. “I dropped an empty can, that’s all.”
We pause. Lines of energy and interest flow between us, connecting our hearts. No, no, no. This isn’t supposed to happen. And it means I should definitely leave.
And I want to.
Yet I can’t.

MY TIDBITS

Lincoln dives into a tale, which anyone who has been following this series, already knows. But don't expect this to be a rehash from another character's perspective because that's not what this is. It's so much better than that.

With the same easy read feel and plunge into action at every bend, the author again delivers a read which is hard to put down. Lincoln is a prince as well-raised and well-balanced as any prince should be. He knows right from wrong and will lead his people gloriously one day, but right now, he needs to stand by his people and parents as they fulfill the time they have been sent to spend in the world of demons and purgatory. As demon hunters, this isn't an easy feat. Worse, Lincoln is horribly attracted to the one female, he needs to stay away from...not only because of who he is, but being near her endangers her life.

I enjoy the easy-writing style of this author as she dives into Lincoln's head and lets the world open up from his perspective. He has tough choices to make, needs to weave around difficult situations, and save everyone he's sworn to and loves. It's fun to root for him, especially as things only get more dangerous and twisted as the pages turn. There's enough details to sink into the world and understand it without ever killing the flow. And there are other great characters to root for (and some to mistrust or simply despise) at his side.

There's romance. Of course. And this is well-done. The reader already knows where it's going, but that doesn't diminish the tension (which is saying a lot to the author). Lincoln's view point has cleared up several mysteries, brought tons more depth, and made the relationship between the two even more exciting. It will be a treat to see where all of this goes next.

DAY ONE OF THE NEW ME
Dear Diary,
Goodbye, old me! This journal will track my transformation into an all-new Calla. Not on the physical side, mind you. I’ll still be a fifteen-year-old pixie, five feet tall with pink hair and violet eyes. Instead, what will change about me is this: as of today, I shall never play another prank for as long as I live.
Definitely.
Maybe.
Hopefully.
Okay, having a diary means being totally honest. It’s true that I’ve made this no-prank promise before. But today the Elven High Council gave me another super-long lecture on my so-called silly attitude. What a bunch of grumps. All their panties were in a twist, too. Why? I just cast one little enchantment that transformed the council’s shampoo into hair remover.
Which was awesome, by the way. The council are way too snooty and into their looks. Plus without their hair, the council rocks an alien vibe. And their silken tresses will all be back to normal after a spell or two. I think. Prince Darius says my magic is too powerful for my own good. He’s too cute for his, so we’re even.
Anyway, back to the council’s lecture. They reviewed this crazy-long list of how I should act going forward. I wrote it all down super carefully:
Act mysterious – always
Be frivolous – never
There was more on their list but what can I say? I got bored. The council also waah waah waah-ed that if I didn’t change my personality and soon, then this was my last warning. One more infraction and I would be kicked out of Pixieland, my home within Faerie.
Exile would be the worst, so I’m putting together a New Me plan.
Next steps to the New Me: swap out my gossamer wings for a bat look … Only answer questions with a long and mysterious ‘maaaaaaybe’ … And no pranks.

MY TIDBITS 

Firstly, if you haven't read at least the last book in the series before this one, Zinnia, you'll have to do that before hitting this one. This book builds where Zinnia leaves off...plus, the others are fun reads in and of themselves.

In this book, Zinnia is in her tower and doesn't see Rhodes as often as she'd like. He is, after all, in training. But of course, the two aren't going to let things stay that way, and neither are their friends. Soon, Zinnia has a plan, which leads to more adventure than she saw coming.

This book is a bit shorter than the rest and makes for a very quick read, but that's not only due to the length. At the turn of every corner, the two main characters and their friends are facing new challenges and decisions. There's never a boring moment as the action speeds along from beginning to end. Add the romance in with the magic, fight scenes, secrets, and fun, and it's quite the mix.

This book is told from various perspectives, which allows insight in the right direction exactly when it's needed. It keeps everything on its toes, but then, the characters are good at that themselves. Each one holds spunk and determination, and the snark keeps the humor high.

Fans of magic, teen romance, dragons, music bands, secrets, fight scenes and simply entertaining reads are sure to enjoy this one.

This box set includes two novels and one novella, each one surrounding the adventures of  Bryar Rose and her friends. Bryar Rose starts out as a pretty normal girl, except for the fact that she's has a Sleeping Beauty Template, which is faulty. Since she's not allowed to attend a usual school, she's stuck in a support group for cases similar to hers. But secrets abound, and soon she winds up in a much bigger conspiracy to take destroy magic. Mix in her best friend, a Cinderella Template, who's a thief and con-artists, and two very hot guys, who pack amazing powers, and boredom stays far away.

This story drew me in even more than I thought it might, and I found myself not wanting to put the books down...which is really not wonderful considering how long it takes to read 700 + pages. Bryar Rose has a few rough edges to her personality, but it slides in nicely with who she is and her past. The friends surrounding her are gems. Each holds their own quirks, guaranteeing more than a couple slightly humorous scenes. It's this sense of humor which balances out the action...and there is ton of action. Bad guys abound, but all aren't what they seem. In the world of magic, anything is possible and does happen. It's an exciting read for fans of strong heroines, friendship, magic, action and a slight bit of fairy tale thrown in.

 MY TIDBITS

What a fun read! Every page is entertaining as an exciting story unfolds...one with magic, dragons, a little romance and a villain to despise.

Zinnia has a wonderful life as a very, young princess, and even more so with her favorite friend. He plays the music and she adds the words. Together, they literally form magic. But one day, she's kidnapped, and the evil doers convince everyone she's really dead. They plan to use her as the center of a very sinister plan, and no one is wiser for it. Living in a cave, Zinnia has no memory of her past or who she really is. She only knows that she is suppose to be the vessel for a special magic, and she accepts this. That is, until she hears the music from a band and suddenly has the desire to escape.

The first chapters how Zinnia as a sweet, little girl, and it's hard not to like her. So, when she's kidnapped, the story grabs and I found myself cheering and hoping for her. Her decisions are understandable, and she never comes across as someone who simply gives in. She's a wonderful heroine to love and root for.

The story is also told from her best friend's point of view. He's kind, strong and yet, natural. His decisions make sense, and his frustrations with Zinnia's sister and friends are understandable. He's not over the top, but stands by Zinnia's side. This isn't love at first sight, but builds on friendship and ends with the promise of more to come.

It's easy to read, which makes it a perfect book to simply get lost in without seeking extreme depth or thought. It's simply an enjoyable ride into dragon-shifter fantasy with enough intrigue and action to keep the reader guessing the entire way through.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed the story even more than I thought I would. So, I'm leaving my honest thoughts.

MY TIDBITS

This is an easy to read, fun adventure for fans of multiverses, science fiction and a dash of romance.

Meimi wakes up to find herself in a hospital. Her memory is gone, especially of the couple who stares down at her, claiming to be her sponsor parents. But worse, her doctor is the evil government scientist that even her missing memory can't erase from her mind. She has no doubt that something is up, and it no doubt involves her special talents. When she again wakes to find herself in an almost prison-like room, the man finally tells her the secret plans. She is to develop a weapon, which might not even be possible to create, and that in 2 months. Not only that, but the weapon will wipe out several million undesirables, including her own mother. Meimi starts to come up with a plan to stop the madness, but it's almost an impossible task. Especially when there's a hulk of a guard who won't let her out of his sights and he appears to have secrets of his own.

I read the two prequels of this series before hitting this novel, and I highly recommend other readers to do the same, since the backstory is necessary to fully dive in and enjoy this book.

Action sits front and center in these pages, keeping descriptions short and excitement high. Meimi is a wonderful heroine. She has a heart of gold, is willing to do about anything for what she thinks is right, doesn't put herself first, and is a super amazing scientist. It's refreshing to see a kick-butt heroine who can be qualified as such thanks to her mind. And this doesn't kill her spunk or sass by any means. While the scenes are packed full of action and tension, humor flows right along with it. It's easy to notice that the author had fun writing this tale.

The writing isn't deep but allows the story to simply come across in all of its adventure and fun. There is just enough character depth to draw in, but this isn't a book about deep thoughts and emotions. Although...there are definite sparks flying, at times. The romance is there, and while it's a bit of love-at-first-sight, this doesn't quite describe it either. There's enough tension and surprises on this end to keep those pages turning as well. More secrets unravel as the problems increase, and while some things are wrapped up by the end, enough new troubles arise to guarantee that this series won't fall into the trap of becoming a bore. In other words, I can't wait to see where this series goes next.
