MY TIDBITS

Humorous and fun animal illustrations keep everything light, while hitting on some sleeping facts.

Animals have various ways of sleeping, and that's what this book is all about. But don't think that it's a calm read, which will ease children into a sleepy mood because it's not that either. There's energy in these pages to make each type of animal interesting and the enjoyment factor high. The book begins with a general introduction into animals and sleep. After that, it heads into various animals (giraffes, hippos, and more) to showcase some of the various ways they sleep. Each one receives a two-page spread, which is packed with vibrant illustrations and many details. The text is spread throughout the page in short sentences, here and there.

The information is light, offering only a few, easy facts for each creature. These are interesting and very age appropriate. It's the humor, however, which rules this book as the animals are shown with silly details and some human articles tossed in (pillows and such). This makes it entertaining from beginning to end to keep any hint of 'teaching' in the distance. I see this working well, especially with more reluctant listeners. While this playful nature keeps things interesting, an illustration of one of the animals on each spread sleeping in the natural manner would have been nice.

It's a fun read, which brings some information about the various types of sleep habits animals have. It'd make a nice group read and is ideal for cozier moments as well.

And here she is...

As a child, Petra Bartíková would draw and stick pictures in her own magazines, which she would then hand around to her classmates. In her teens she wrote a lot – as well as letters and diaries, she would invent stories and send them to friends by post. Although she wanted to be a photographer or graphic designer, she studied Czech literature and spent several years working as a journalist. In her free time, she travelled widely and discovered children’s books, which she wrote about in her blog. Having become tired of journalism, she took on a new challenge; now she works at a publishing house, where she thinks up stories and writes books for children.

Born in Bratislava in 1983,  Katarína Macurová studied under Professor Dušan Kállay in the Department of Graphics and Illustration at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. She came to the attention of the general public with her children’s books Proč nekveteš?/ Why Won’t You Flower?. She has an additional interest in 3D graphics. Her innovative work has already won her several prestigious awards, including the Communication Arts Award of Excellence in the USA.

Cute! When I was a kid, I had a book called How Animals Sleep. (I still have it in fact. It's over 50 years old now.)
